Carole Hoff was the second wife of serial killer John Wayne Gacy. They reportedly got married in 1972, and Carole was delighted and she thought John was a match. At the time, John was hanging out with a group of businessmen who were interested in wife-swapping, drugs, and pornography.
He hired teenagers to help him with chores only to abuse them, earning him an oral conviction for sodomy, a 10-year sentence, and his first divorce in December 1968.

According to various reports, they had known each other since their youth. They dated when he was 16, but went their separate ways. When they rekindled their romance, she had two children from a previous marriage. Gacy was a homeowner running a successful business, while Carole Hoff was a financially poor single mother.
“It floored me,” Carole said. In June 1972, Carole enthusiastically decided to marry an old family acquaintance, who was now the independent owner of 8213 West Summerdale Avenue. Meanwhile, Gacy had already brought his first victim to the property months earlier, stabbing and burying 16-year-old Timothy McCoy in the basement.
At the time, Carole had no idea about the murder and the stuffed body in her basement. For the nearly four years of her marriage, Carole ignored the “terrible stench” of rot beneath her.
Although her two daughters didn’t seem to mind the stink, Hoff’s mother often commented that it smelled “like dead rats.” Carole believed John when she said it was most likely rats or a leaking sewer pipe. Gacy was infuriated when she asked her husband about the pile of children’s purses that she had discovered.
“I would throw out furniture,” Carole said. “He broke a lot of my furniture. I now believe that if there were murders, some of them must have occurred while I was in that house.”
Gacy was sentenced to death, but she believed that he repented and served his sentence with honor. John, on the other hand, was just getting started, kidnapping homeless youths or luring young men into his home under the guise of paid work, only to sodomize, torture, and strangle them.

She was well aware of his tendencies early on, but towards the end of their relationship she said, “He couldn’t function with a woman.”
“We barely had sex,” she explained. “It was very difficult for him to have anything to do with me.”
Around this time, Carole discovered men’s wallets and gay pornographic magazines hidden under the kitchen sink, and one of the photos was of a young man who appeared to be bloody.
In February 1976, Carole and her two daughters moved out of the house in Summerdale.
On March 2, 1976, Carole divorced her husband “on the ground that he was seeing other women.” Without Carole, John had full control of the castle and was free to indulge her bloodlust. Whether John saved his own life by running away is impossible to say, but after he did, Gacy killed dozens more.
“But I didn’t feel like he particularly liked Carole. I’ve never seen his affection,” explained Marty Zielinski, a former Gacy employee. “I never saw any affection for anyone. He could be nice or he could be a total jerk, he could flip a coin. My impression was that John only cared about John.

Carole Hoff later said in a television interview that John was sexually dysfunctional with women. About the murders she added: “he threw furniture. He broke a lot of my furniture. I now think that if there were murders, some of them must have occurred while I was in that house.”
