In this article, we’ll talk about the 64th Annual Grammy Awards held last night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
So let’s get into that. The Grammys aired last night at 8 pm ET. If you follow Kpop, I’m sure you know that last November it was announced that BTS received a Grammy nomination.
This was a big deal because BTS essentially broke records by being the first k-pop act to be nominated for a Grammy.
So obviously this was a big, big problem. The category they were nominated in was the Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and of course the song was butter.
If you like K-pop or BTS, you know that “Butter” was a huge hit. It is played literally everywhere. If you ask me, it was one of the biggest songs of the summer and fall. He was extremely good on the charts. It was a success. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 10 weeks starting last June. It also dominated the Billboard Global Excl. US chart for five weeks and Billboard Global 200 for two weeks.
Unfortunately, Doja Cat and SZA’s “Kiss Me More” won the 2022 Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. They beat out BTS (“Butter”), Coldplay (“Higher Power”), Justin Bieber and Benny Blanco (“Lonely”), Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga (“Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga”) to win (“I Get a Kick outside of you”).
Note: This is Doja Cat’s first Grammy winner.
Doja Cat are amazing musicians, but I was shocked when I saw that they beat BTS just because “butter” was a big deal for me.
I was sad, but then again, I wasn’t surprised because this is the Grammys.
I’ve seen a lot of BTS fans on Twitter expressing their disappointment, you know, saying how is that possible, how can they put BTS down, but one thing I wanted to mention is that winning a Grammy isn’t based on the success of a song. is on the charts, so apparently Butter completely beat out Doja Cat and SZA’s “Kiss Me More” when it comes to charting and how well it did in international airplay, digital sales, etc.
But unfortunately, that’s not how the Grammys work. Basically, there are recording academies. It’s a group of, I think, several hundred people. They are experts in the music industry.
You have experts for each genre of music, so one person can be an expert in rap, another person can be an expert in pop, etc., and they vote for those genres of music.
So it’s not like streaming or listening to music affects who wins a Grammy. It’s basically a group of music experts who cast their votes and decide who wins. Based on that, it makes sense that Doja Cat and SZA’s “Kiss Me More” would win.
I’m sure those music experts probably don’t care about k-pop or BTS because they probably don’t exist. They are probably mostly American or Western experts. They probably don’t care about k-pop. And to be honest with you, I really think that the GRAMMYs only use BTS to look at. Somehow they were forced to nominate them.
The way it works is that a song or act has to be submitted for the Grammys, and then the Recording Academy reviews all the submissions, grades them, reviews them, and can then approve them for a Grammy nomination.
So when BTS’s song “Butter” was submitted, they couldn’t deny the fact that the song was huge, so they gave it a thumbs up, but didn’t necessarily give them the win. And like I said, I think part of the reason BTS was nominated and brought to the Grammys was because of the criticism. Let’s face it: No one is under any pressure to watch the Grammys. If anything, people just watch it as a condensed version when it’s over, or just check Twitter to see if their favorite artist wins. No one really wants to sit through a three and a half to four hour show.
Once again, while watching the ceremony, we already knew that BTS didn’t win, but BTS ARMY wanted to see them perform, so what did they do with the Grammys? They kept saying, “Oh, BTS is next, BTS is next,” but that was pushed out by more and more acts showing up before them, and I think it was three and a half hours later when BTS finally performed “Butter.” . .” On top of that, they were praised on Twitter even for their outfit.
They definitely used the BTS reviews. They know that BTS is huge. They know that BTS probably has the biggest fan base in the world. You know BTS was the world’s best-selling artist in 2020, surpassing Taylor Swift. So, of course, this is a great way to appeal to a group of people who wouldn’t normally care about the Grammys. Brilliant.
It’s very sad, but I still think the Grammys are very Western in orientation. They are probably a bit xenophobic. They don’t really care about K-pop artists. They don’t really care about BTS, but BTS is a great way to secure an audience.
One thing I thought was really cute when it was found out that BTS didn’t win was that a lot of the BTS ARMY was expressing their disappointment on Twitter, and the BTS members were actually posting on Weavers to cheer everyone up, and that’s so similar to they.
At the end of the day, this is like my message to the other armies: we couldn’t win, we were nominated, and we had to perform for the second time as the first Korean artists.
In the end, BTS doesn’t really need a Grammy endorsement.
Deborah Dugan, the suspended CEO of the Grammy Awards, claimed the corporation discriminated “against women and people of color” before the Recording Academy ousted her.
Dugan filed a major lawsuit after it was suspended in January 2020, accusing the organization of silencing her over sexual harassment and voting irregularities.
According to Eminem, the organizers give the honor to friends in the industry.
