Mutalk is a strange VR microphone that aims to prevent sound leaks

Tired of your VR microphone picking up sound other than your voice? Mutalk is a new VR audio solution built to prevent audio leakage, and in practice it looks a bit strange.

The product comes from Shiftall, which had a very busy CES 2022. The technology company is expanding its presence in the metaverse with a suite of innovative products created in collaboration with Panasonic. Mutalk is part of a product line that includes the MeganeX VR headset and the unusual Pebble Feel “personal air conditioner.”

The VR user uses a Mutalk microphone.

Mutalk is a Bluetooth microphone that can be used with VR. Instead of looking like your average microphone, it looks more like a VR headset. It is a white box that can be attached to the player’s face via a wraparound strap. It looks a bit like a horse feed sack when worn.

The idea is that the microphone can reduce audio leakage for VR users. This means that ambient noise will not be picked up, so the player’s voice can be clearer. Shiftall also means you can mute the user’s voice so that other people in the house can’t hear them speaking out loud in VR. Mutalk can last at least 10 hours on a charge.

Although built with VR and the metaverse in mind, the microphone can be used in any context. Those who want to wear it in a Zoom meeting can simply hold it to their face instead of strapping it on. It only requires a basic Windows, iOS or Android connection.

Mutalk is expected to launch this summer and will retail for around $200.
