Making GIFs on your Android phone is a fun way to create animated images on the go so you always have perfect GIF reactions when you text your friends. Creating them is easy and we explain how to use the free GIPHY app. Keep reading!

What is a GIF?

GIPHY website

Short for Graphics Interchange Format, GIF is a bitmap image format created by computer scientist Steve Wilhite in the late 1980s. It was initially envisioned as an image format that could be easily downloaded from the now-defunct ISP CompuServe. However, GIF did not gain a recognizable ability to display animations until several years and several revisions after its initial release.

Today, GIFs are a common image format used on the web to easily display short animations. Due to the format’s relatively small file size compared to full-resolution video, GIFs have become an easy way to share moments on the web. Communities on Reddit, like r/GIF, are dedicated to sharing some of the best GIFs available on the web and showcasing the possibilities of the format.

It’s important to note that GIFs are, in fact, an image format and therefore cannot play sound: they are silent.

Using GIPHY

GIPHY is our current favorite for making GIFs. Launched in 2013, GIPHY is one of the most popular GIF databases on the web, but the Android app also includes an option to create your own. After downloading and installing the app, you will immediately see the GIPHY gallery from which you can browse and search for different GIFs. If you’re not familiar with the format, this is a great place to explore and get started.

Step 1: Tap Create button in the upper right corner. The symbol moves from “+” to camera. Alternatively, you can touch Profile in the lower right corner, followed by a large more/camera on your account page.

Step 2: Tap Allow access to the camera button.

Step 3 – Tap Allow in two questions.

Step 4 – Tap I agree button.

Note: You will only perform steps 2-4 the first time you create a GIF.

Step 5: The app uses the front camera by default. Tap Camera icon in the lower right corner to change the camera if necessary.

Step 6 – Under the live stream, swipe left or right on the toolbar to select a filter or effect. There are 11 in all, including animated hands feeding you popcorn (shown above), VHS static, a red/blue filter for vintage 3D glasses, and so on.

Step 7: Press Ffilter or repercussions to take a still photo or press and hold Ffilter or repercussions button to create an animated GIF. There’s also an option to not use a filter or effect – it’s just a big white button.

If you are creating animations, the app will gradually form a line around the entire screen. This serves as a visual “timer.” Once the line is perfectly attached to the outer edges of the screen, the app will stop recording.

Step 8: After capturing the scene you want, you can add it to an image or video. Press one of the four buttons to insert additional elements:

  • Text: Write the text you want using nine different colors.
  • Effects: Add eight different effects ranging from a rainbow overlay to a whimsical glass effect and black and white film grain.
  • Stickers: Giphy offers a huge selection of animated stickers that are too long to list here. Do you want kissable lips? You understand. Do you need some shine? There is plenty to make your image shine.
  • Trim (animation only): — Cut the part you don’t need by moving the left and right markers.

Step 9: Select the snipping tool located in the upper right corner of the screen. This will help you to resize the GIF. These are the available size options:

Step 10: When you’re done, click the purple right arrow button.

Step 11: Type the tags you want attached to your GIF (if you’re uploading one).

Step 12: Click Share GIF to share via text message, Facebook Messenger, Snapchat and Instagram. You can also click Save Video to save the initial recorded video to your device. Hit Save GIF to save your creation locally too.

Step 13: To post your GIF online, tap the box next to the Terms of Service agreement. After that, tap on the blue Upload to GIPHY icon.

Alternative to GIPHY: GIF Yo!

GIF Me is a simpler alternative to GIPHY. It allows you to record videos using its cameras. With this app, you can easily upload previously saved photos, video files, and GIFs through the built-in album feature.

After stopping video recording, you can choose from 11 standard photo filters. The app also provides you with special tools that allow you to add or remove frames of animations, increase or decrease animation, and add lines of text. You will also have access to fun and entertaining features like cool stickers and cool looking borders to add some visual appeal to your screen. Once you’ve finished your project, you can save it as a GIF or MP4 file.
