Super Bowl 2023 halftime show: who’s performing?

There are few shows as big, (over)hyped, and magnificent as the Super Bowl halftime show. It doesn’t matter that every NFL game seems to try to turn halftime into some sort of 5-minute concert starring someone you may never have heard of (of course, that depends on your age).

The Super Bowl halftime show is for everyone. And while all halftime shows are great, some are better than others. This year? It will be good. Really good. You’ll definitely want to watch the 2023 Super Bowl on February 12 not just because of the game, by the way, it’s Eagles vs. Chiefs, but also for acting.

Who’s in the Super Bowl 2023 halftime show?

Headlining the Super Bowl 2023 halftime show is none other than Rihanna. That in itself is a big deal: the woman knows how to put on a show. And they’ll be able to do it in the way we’ve come to expect from the biggest game of the year. It will be accessible, with songs you’ve no doubt heard before. And it will be mostly for the family, because this is the NFL, of course, and the game is on TV.

The halftime celebration will also be available on Fox in 4K and HDR, so you’ll be able to see RiRi in all the stunning detail she deserves.

But we’re also talking about Rihanna, so the performance will have some advantage. We dare say that she will probably have just the right amount of sensuality.

There’s another major player influencing this year’s Super Bowl halftime show, and that’s Apple. The show itself has always had a title sponsor, and this year it’s Apple Music. So it’s officially the “Apple Music Halftime Show”.

And that means we’ve got a great performer and a great sponsor, neither of whom is known for cutting anything halfway. And judging from the teaser released by the two on January 13, it’s going to be quite the show.

In an interview with Nadeska Alexis three days before the event, Rihanna gave us a little preview of what’s to come. “We are excited to be performing at the Super Bowl,” Rihanna said during the live event, which was streamed on YouTube and Apple Music, among others. “We’ve been working on it for a while and every day it gets closer and closer to the finished product.”

The Super Bowl Halftime Show also marks Rihanna’s return to live performance after several years and the birth of her son in May 2022.

“I haven’t been on stage for seven years,” he said. “There is something exciting about the challenge of all this. It’s important for me to do it this year. This is important for the national team. It’s important for my son to see that.”

Expect some of RiRi’s biggest hits, but there’s way too much music to cram into a halftime show, even one that takes place during the biggest sporting event of the year.

“The list was the biggest challenge,” he said. “That was the hardest part: deciding how to maximize the 13 minutes, but also celebrate. This is what the show will be like: it will be a celebration of my catalog in the best way we can put it together.”

Apple Music Radio will also have special halftime shows, including Halftime Hype Radio, a 10-part series “reflecting some of the biggest Super Bowl halftime performances of all time.” (The best, of course, is Prince.)

We don’t know exactly what time halftime will be, since it’s a live sporting event. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, February 12 (that’s 3:30 p.m. on the West Coast). The game will be broadcast on Fox. Allow yourself at least 90 minutes to get through the first two quarters, but it’s always better to tune in sooner than later to make sure you don’t miss a thing.

Plus, you don’t want to miss all the great Super Bowl commercials! And, you know, the game itself.

Who else is at halftime?

Rihanna is great. The best, even. But she is not the only star that we will see during the game. Consider this: the show is produced by Roc Nation. And when you listen to Roc Nation, you listen to Shawn Carter. Does this mean we’ll see Jay-Z on stage with Rihanna? Wouldn’t we put money against that? How about someone else on the Roc Nation roster? Absolutely possible.

Anyway, everything will be covered as closely as possible. Fox says it has 94 cameras available. Forty-four are game cameras, another 18 for pre-game festivities, and 16 robotic cameras. And with all the photographers at hand.

Who sings the national anthem?

The NFL has announced some pregame entertainment, and it’s big. Headlining the halftime show is Chris Stapleton, with the winner of eight Grammy Awards, 15 Country Music Association Awards and 10 Academy of Country Music Awards performing the National Anthem. Arizona native and actor Troy Kotsur (you’ll remember him from the Apple TV+ movie Code) will perform a song in American Sign Language.

And keep in mind, this is all on Fox, not NFL Sunday Ticket.

This will be followed by R&B legend Babyface, who will sing America the BEAUTIFUL. Emmy-winning actress Sheryl Lee Ralph will also sing Lift up every voice and sing.
