Prince William is looking for nominees to the $1 million Earthshot prize

LONDON (AP) — Britain’s Prince William, Prince of Wales, has called on innovators from around the world to submit nominations for his Earthshot Prize competition. This award aims to find innovative ways to combat climate change.

William and the Royal Foundation, his charity, presented the 2020 award, inspired by President John F. Kennedy’s 1962 “Moonshot” speech, which challenged Americans to reach the moon by the end of the decade.

This award is the most prestigious and will be awarded annually to five winners each year until 2030. Each winner will receive a grant worth £1 million (US$1.4 million) to help them develop and scale their ideas.

The foundation said this year’s prizes will go to projects that address “tipping point” issues, where significant opportunities exist to bring about positive change for decades to come. These include personal transportation, agriculture that restores nature, buildings that reduce pollution and energy consumption, and initiatives that extend the life of clothing, food, and plastic products.

William stated that he is excited to see the solutions that will win the award next year. “We are determined to go even further in 2022 by seeking more nominations from around the world, so we can highlight and measure the best ideas and innovations that will put the planet on a sustainable path and protect it for future generations.”
