6 reasons why Robert Downey Jr. needs to return as Iron Man

Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man remains one of the most beloved superheroes to ever grace the screen. Although Tony Stark sacrificed himself Avengers Endgame (one of the best Marvel movies), some fans are hoping it will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point during its ongoing Multiverse saga.

While it seems unnecessary for this character to return after such a satisfying end to his heroic journey, here’s a list of reasons why RDJ should return to the MCU as Iron Man.

He could appear as a villain.

If Marvel Studios wants to do something different with Iron Man, they could have him or a variant of him appear as a villain under Kang’s control, similar to how Darkseid brainwashes Superman in the DC Extended Universe.

Such a twist has already happened in the comics, as a variant of Kang known as Immortus (who recently appeared in Ant-Man and the Wasp: quantum mania) once manipulated Stark into doing his bidding and fighting the Avengers. Forcing the mightiest forces on Earth to fight one of his strongest and closest allies in the MCU would lead to some sinister mind games on Kang’s part and the climax of his reign.

His rival genius Kangu

As one of the MCU’s greatest minds, Stark has repeatedly used his intelligence to take down the world’s greatest threats. He built the Arc Reactor, discovered an entirely new element, invented time travel, and created a new Infinity Gauntlet to undo Thanos’ Snap.

Considering Kang’s technology is several centuries ahead of the Avenger’s, the heroes may need Stark’s intelligence to catch up with this time-traveling tyrant in his war against the Multiverse. While the Fantastic Four’s Reed Richards has a relatively high IQ and will undoubtedly play a key role in the near future, he wouldn’t hurt to have another super genius on the team.

It will attract many fans.

It’s no secret that Marvel movies have had a rough time since the end of the Infinity Saga. The MCU experienced a decline in overall quality as many of the movies and shows during Phase 4 did not get the reception Marvel Studios had hoped for. Bad reviews for Kang’s debut film, quantum maniadoesn’t bode well for the continuation of the Multiverse saga, as it’s supposed to be the franchise’s next big bad.

However, the return of Iron Man to join the fight against Kang could help the MCU restore fans’ faith in the franchise by giving the hero one last poetic stand. Downey is still a draw as Iron Man, though recent developments at Disney make that unlikely. iron man 4 will it ever happen, the box office of any MCU movie he appears in would be huge.

That would make Secret Wars even more exciting.

Probably the best time for Tony Stark to reappear would be in the MCU multiverse epic, Avengers: Secret Wars. Given that the MCU has played with time travel and introduced heroes from other universes, RDJ’s return could happen with Stark being pulled from the past before he died or a variant of him from another universe getting caught up in the conflict with Kang.

Iron Man’s appearance in secret wars would make a triumphant return on par with the portal scene in Endgame or the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in there is no way home (readers can already hear the applause from the public). The MCU is already planning a similar revival with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. Deadpool 3 after his grave death in Loganso it doesn’t seem so far-fetched to bring Iron Man back one more time.

Stark and Kang are polar opposites.

If Iron Man were to return to the MCU, taking on Kang the Conqueror would make for an interesting clash of the titans. Think about it. Both Stark and Kang are super scientists in high-tech armor who use their resources to do what they think is best for the world.

Although Stark found a strong reflection in Thanos, Kang was able to come close to the complete opposite. These two geniuses fighting over their ideas of how to protect the Multiverse would be the philosophical crux of the entire Multiverse saga and it’s a clash fans would be dying to see.

He inadvertently began the Multiverse Saga.

Thor, Iron Man and Captain America in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Inventing time travel and going back to 2012 Game over, Stark accidentally allows a Loki variant to escape with the Tesseract. This error triggered events of Loki, which ended with Sylvie killing the One Who Remains, shattering the sacred timeline, and recreating an infinite number of Kangs to wreak havoc on the Multiverse. Although Scott Lang gave the Avengers the technology they needed to build their time machine, in the end it was Iron Man who set the stage for Kang’s return.

Given that he seems to be the cause of most of the villains appearing in the MCU, it seems only fitting that Stark would return to help the Avengers end the chaos he’s inadvertently wreaked on creation. He would also allow all of the Avengers to face the consequences of their manipulation of history, even if it was for the right reason, and to question whether they can be considered true heroes at this point.
