The good news is that the Samsung Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 Plus, and Galaxy S23 Ultra all have a good chance of surviving an unfortunate encounter with water, as they each have an IP68 water resistance rating.
Does this make the phones raincoat? No, but they really are. waterproof. Many people use the terms interchangeably, but there is a difference, and it is worth understanding.
Understanding the IP68 rating
The Ingress Protection (IP) rating is an international standard by which products are tested to determine how resistant they are to water and dust. The numbers refer to the effectiveness of the protection. IP68 is the highest rating we see on smartphones, which means you won’t find anything better than the competition, all without having to put the device in a special case.
The first number of the IP68 classification refers to protection against dust and particles, and the six is the highest available in a smartphone. The Galaxy S23 series is dustproof, so no particles can enter the phone and interfere with sensitive electronic components. The second number relates to water resistance and is a bit more complicated.

Eight is the highest rating available, and according to Samsung, this means the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 Plus and Galaxy S23 Ultra will be resistant to fresh water penetration to a depth of 1.5 meters for 30 minutes. The company recommends not exposing the phone to “violently moving” water, and that if it does come into contact with liquids other than water, rinse it with fresh water and then wipe it dry.
It puts the Galaxy S23 line at the top of the pack when it comes to water resistance, alongside devices like the Apple iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro. Samsung’s Armor Aluminum material was used for the case and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 to cover the screen, which means the rest of the phone is solid too.
We still recommend putting it in a case if you’re prone to dropping your phone, because as tough as glass and aluminum are, dropping it on a hard surface for long won’t help.
