Throughout its 169-minute runtime, there were several moments where I wondered if I was witnessing the best choreographed fight sequence ever filmed. Most people will single out the Berlin nightclub sequence as the most visually stunning sequence, since it took hundreds of extras to pull it off. However, one scene I can’t stop thinking about happened in Paris on the steps leading up to the Sacré Coeur basilica.

IN Chapter 4John travels to Paris with Winston (deadwood Ian McShane) for his duel with Marquis Vincent de Gramont (Is Bill Skarsgård) as he tries to win his freedom and pay off his debt to the high table. de Gramont chooses blind assassin Caine (Rogue One’s Donnie Yen) to fight in his place. The duel was scheduled for dawn the following morning in front of the Sacré Coeur basilica. If John and Winston don’t arrive on time, they will be executed.
de Gramont wants nothing to do with John, so that night he puts a $40 million worth of contract on his head. Every assassin in Paris does everything for John, but “Baba Yaga” defeats all challengers in her way. He even gets a break when Mr. Nobody (Invasion’s Shamier Anderson) interrupts the chase after John saves his dog from death. After killing what appears to be an army of assassins, John reaches the bottom of the Sacré Coeur, only 200 paces from his chance of freedom. Now the fun begins.
As John begins to climb, the assassins try to stop him from reaching the top in any way they can. Bullet by bullet, blow by blow, John eliminates all the assassins in his path and continues his climb towards the Sacré Coeur. As expected, he makes it to the top, but before he can celebrate, De Gramont’s chief assassin throws John down the stairs. In a movie with impressive gunfights and elaborate sword fights, John painfully rolling down the stairs elicited the biggest reaction from the audience, as gasps of surprise and disappointment echoed through my theater.

When all hope seems lost, John gains an ally in the form of his future adversary, Caine, who must defeat John in a duel to protect his daughter. But Caine needs John to agree to make that happen, so he agrees to join forces and climb over 200 steps as a team. John walking up the stairs for the first time was exciting, but adding a partner like Caine to the mix takes the scene to a whole new level of fun. Reeves and Yen are two of the most famous action stars in history, and this moment reflects my excitement when Rocky and Apollo joined forces in Rocky III.
This scene includes everything that makes the John Wick movies special. The highly choreographed sequences are nothing short of spectacular. The unintentional comedy is perfect, especially from Caine, who somehow makes stabbing another human a delightful pursuit. Also, the scene shows an obedient dog taking revenge on de Gramont’s killer who tried to kill him. Who doesn’t love a good boy?
When John and Caine finally come out on top, it’s a huge sigh of relief for all parties involved. The characters involved in the fight and the audience watching from home can finally take a moment to catch their breath. So far, the set of stairs is one of the most impressive scenes in the John Wick franchise, but that will surely change if john wick 5 It will happen because Stahelski and Reeves will do everything in their power to raise the bar once again.
