Lack of sleep is the new smoking. According to SleepFoundation.org, 35.2% of all adults report getting less than seven hours of sleep a night, and nearly half of all Americans report feeling sleepy during the day several times a week.

We need sleep and smart technology could help us. Smart mattresses can provide greater levels of comfort and temperature control while adjusting the temperature to help the user sleep.

Half of all Americans say they feel sleepy during the day several times a week.

I have been testing the Chilisleep Dock Pro sleep system for a few weeks now. While it definitely does some things right, it also has a lot of room for improvement.

Lacks night comfort

A comfortable bed is key to a good night’s sleep. In fact, the Chilisleep Dock Pro was a bit disappointing for me. I reviewed the Dock Pro ME, the single-user version of the device, and I should note that the Dock Pro WE covers the entire bed and probably wouldn’t have the same issues.

Dock Pro consists of three basic components: The pump mechanism, which sits on the floor or on a nightstand; the mattress cover itself; and the hose connecting the two.

Dock Pro ME only covers one side of the bed.

The mattress cover slips over the existing mattress. Secure it with two straps that fit under your mattress. In theory it should work, but not in practice.

My situation could be different. Neither my wife nor I are what you would call deep sleepers – we toss and turn a lot during the night. The Dock Pro lid would bunch up and bulge under me overnight, only causing more tossing and turning. I found myself straightening out the Dock Pro every night before I went to bed. The cover itself is comfortable enough to lie on, but the mechanism for attaching it to the bed needs improvement. It would work better on a double bed, but not so much on a queen bed.

Another thing to consider is the sound. Although not much, the pump makes noise. You can place it at the headboard or at the foot of the bed; if possible I suggest placing it on a pedestal. This reduces the noise you will hear. However, for people who enjoy the white forest at night, this could be a great help. According to the specifications, the volume is 41 to 46 decibels at a distance of 1 foot.

One of the best examples of temperature control.

Now to the good stuff. The Dock Pro’s primary purpose is temperature control, and it excels at that. I have a short temper and often find myself tossing the sheets at night, but the Dock Pro really calmed me down. You can adjust the temperature from 55 degrees Fahrenheit to 115 degrees Fahrenheit, although neither extreme is suggested. You can manipulate the temperature using the buttons on the device or through the app.

The Dock Pro can wake you up by gently warming it up, rather than by shaking it or playing a loud noise into your ear.

If you have a consistent schedule, you can set the time that the bed will automatically start heating or cooling to the desired temperature. It may take experimenting to find the ideal temperature for your sleep habits, but once you do, you’ll sleep better.

Another plus is the heat alarm. During sleep, the body temperature drops a degree or two (and this is one of the reasons why a cooler room is more suitable for sleeping). As you start to wake up, your body slowly starts to warm up. The Dock Pro can wake you up by gently warming it up, rather than by shaking it or playing a loud noise into your ear. It’s a much better way to wake up, you’re less groggy and more alert.

The Dock Pro pump unit sits on a folded sleeping mat.

One missing feature is sleep tracking. In the future, this will be possible through the Sleepme Insight Tracker, but it is not yet available. The lack of this feature made the product feel incomplete; Understanding how well you sleep each night is key to determining your ideal temperature setting, and since the feature isn’t available yet, it feels a bit like walking blind.

Maintenance and connection

A strong selling point of the Dock Pro is that there are no electrical connections or cables inside the mattress cover, just water pipes. As a result, it’s completely machine washable and dryer safe. No electricity is safer and also means no EMF or electromagnetic fields.

Studies have shown that low frequency magnetic fields can have negative effects on sleep cycles. The pad doesn’t emit any of that and it’s possible to put the Dock Pro pump in airplane mode to reduce the field it produces.

Pump maintenance is easy. The tank holds 20 oz (600 ml) of water. Use distilled water when filling it. From time to time you will need to clean the tank, but the instructions for this are simple.

Unfortunately, the application is not that simple. The first time I set up the Dock Pro, I had to reset the app and the Dock Pro itself before one would recognize the other. Since then I routinely lose connection and am forced to fiddle with the pump or turn it off just to get the app back online. It’s frustrating to say the least. The good news is that I can adjust the temperature on the Dock Pro itself, but I wish it was easier.

Prices and affordability

As smart beds go, the Dock Pro is actually more affordable. The Dock Pro ME sleeping system I tested is just $999 for a queen bed, but WE, the full-size version for two, starts at $1,699 for a queen and $1,899 for a king or California King.

That’s still a lot of money, but less than other smart beds on the market.

Our opinion

The ChiliSleep Dock Pro sleeping system shows great promise, but is still experiencing growing problems. That’s not to say it’s a bad product at all: if sleep tracking becomes available soon, it would be a solid value, especially if crowding issues are addressed.

Is there a better alternative?

Smart mattresses have not yet become widespread on the market. If you’re just looking for a top of the bed, the Eight Sleep Pod Pro is $1,745 for a Queen bed and fits the entire bed.

How long will it last?

The mattress cover is durable and the Dock Pro is heavy enough to withstand constantly moving water. With caution, this system should last at least five years, but even if something happens, ChiliSleep offers a three-year limited warranty.

Should I buy it?

That’s a solid “maybe.” If you want an affordable smart mattress that’s easy for one person to use, the Dock Pro ME is a decent option. If you’re sharing a bed with another person, consider full bed versions. There are few things less comfortable than an unmade bed in the middle of the night.
