While the global obsession with zombies isn’t as widespread as it was a few years ago, we’re still set to see some serious undead action in the future. Undead Labs has the third entry in its State of Decay series in the works that is sure to pit an eclectic cast of survivors against hordes of roaming undead as they attempt to rebuild in a brutal world. So far, each installment in the series has included elements of action-adventure, survival-horror, stealth, role-playing, and strategy, blending the genres into an engaging civilization-rebuilding, zombie-decapitation experience.
We still don’t have many details about what Decay state 3 It would seem, but we’ve been stealthily scouring the moor for any news we can find. It’s definitely one of our most anticipated upcoming games for Xbox Series X. Here’s all we know about it. Decay state 3 now.
Release date
Neither Undead Labs nor Microsoft have announced a release date for the Decay state 3, which means it will be a while before we see the highly anticipated sequel. When the cinematic announcement trailer was released at the Xbox Games Showcase event in July 2020, Undead Labs said the game was in early pre-production. Undead Labs was reportedly pressured to release an announcement trailer before the developers felt they were ready to do so. A March 2022 research report from Kotaku described a major cultural shift at Undead Labs after it was acquired by Microsoft in 2018, resulting in allegations of mismanagement, attrition, and misogyny.
Fans expected to see again Decay state 3 during Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase 2022, but it wasn’t mentioned at all. There was also no new news from the studio during any other gaming events in 2022 or so far in 2023.
It seems the project is still in pre-production, and the situation at Undead Labs doesn’t bode well for an imminent release. Meanwhile, Undead Labs has continued to support State of Decay 2, first released in 2018, with fairly regular updates.

Our first and only look Decay state 3 is a cinematic trailer released by Microsoft in July 2020. While the trailer does not reveal any plot or gameplay details, there is still something to unpack.
The trailer shows a lone survivor trying to survive in a cold and hostile environment (fans suggested that the game’s location could be Alaska, Colorado, Wyoming, or Canada depending on the setting). The survivor hears him sharpening wooden bolts for her crossbow by the campfire. something in the surrounding forest: piercing white eyes appear in the darkness, looking at a lonely man. Instead of firing the crossbow, running away, or at least putting out her fire to make herself less visible, the survivor does something we’ve all learned not to do in a zombie apocalypse scenario: she yells at whatever it is that’s chasing her. , not outside of it. scary, but apparently to scare. And works! Whatever she has infiltrated her camp is on the run. But what was it? On all previous State of Decay entries, sound is an absolute no-no. The more noise you make, the more zombies will chase you, screaming and summoning more undead allies along the way.
Later in the short trailer, a survivor finds a trail of blood in the snow and begins to follow someone or something that has been injured. Peering into the scope of his crossbow, he sees the carcass of a wolf being eaten by what appears to be a zombified deer: the entire right side of his face is open and rotting. After the hit, the deer lets out a terrible scream and the trailer ends abruptly.
Weren’t the zombies enough? Now we have to deal with zombie animals in the wild? Hopefully there will be significant improvements to the weapon over the simple crossbow shown in the trailer. We’re going to need all the firepower we can find.
Playing
We don’t have game details yet, but we’re assuming it’s the core. Decay state 3 it will look a lot like its predecessors. Controlling a small community of survivors, players will comb the map for survival supplies, other lost people to recruit into their community, and Plague Hearts to destroy.
Some things fans are hoping to see an overhaul are the game’s base building system (which was a bit clunky in the SOD2)a bit more character development and more robust customization options for weapons, cars, clothing, etc. while the characters SOD2 they had a lot of backstory to share and an odd short line to bring them some life, there were virtually no character changes throughout the game, and very few instances where the characters got seriously close. If a plague of street zombies killed a former member of the community, the rest of the team would be in low spirits for a day or two, perhaps handing down a penitential sentence, but then back to work.
As mentioned, this is the first time the State of Decay games have been moved to the wild. Given the elements of survival games, this means that the third installment could see the weather as a key factor and could affect how shelters are built or heated.
In a recent podcast, Xbox Game Studios boss Matt Booty revealed this. Decay state 3 is being built on Unreal Engine 5 with the help of Gears of War developer The Coalition, meaning the newest entry in the series will be visually stunning every time it’s released. There are also hints that the game has more cinematic cuts than previous entries: Undead Labs have been seen collaborating with other XGS teams on animation work.

Decay State 2 it was mostly a solo effort, but there were plenty of ways to play with friends or join in on strangers’ games. Once you start a campaign, you can have a friend join you and take on another survivor in your community. However, there were several limitations of the system. The incoming player would be tied to the host, meaning the other player would stray too far, turn off the screen, and return to the area near the host. So there wasn’t room for completely separate exploration on the same map, and the linking system made quick escapes from zombie hordes too easy in some cases.
Players can also use the in-game radio to send a distress call to the State of Decay servers, inviting any other online player to come in and play on their map.
Cross-platform play between Xbox and PC players was also enabled.
It’s safe to assume Decay state 3 will have similar multiplayer options. One option that we felt was missing from its predecessor was true shared servers. Creating a community with your friend that both of you can access at any time would be great, instead of having a friend hopping around on a map you own. It’s never been fun to work in someone’s community and level up a survivor only to log into your own game and go back to square one.

Decay State 2 seen a handful of DLC in my life. Each introduced a handful of new weapons, vehicles, clothing, and item mods to the game, adding a bit of spice to the game.
The latest DLC, called Heartland, returned players to Trumbull Valley, the original setting. state of decay, for a more story-based gameplay. In Heartland, players choose between two sets of starting characters who have traveled to Trumbull Valley for different reasons. Both pairs of survivors are on a mission to find people important to them: characters that appeared in the original. state of decay.
