Legendary TV host Tom Brokaw is opening up about his difficult choice to leave NBC News after being diagnosed with terminal blood cancer.
Brokaw talks about how difficult it is to leave NBC in 2021, eight years after he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, in an interview with longtime friend and fellow journalist Jane Pauley. Shows this weekend on CBS News Sunday Morning.
In a short video released Friday, Brokaw, 83, said: “I had to change my life.” “I literally had to stop working with NBC every day. You see, they’re leaving me, so I have to do the same. I am simply another person.
First, Brokaw said goodbye to the network he considered home since 1966, as well as his cherished position at NBC News. After stepping down as host of NBC’s nightly news in 2004, he became an older statesman. But illness changed his course, forcing him to leave the station.
The famous journalist also recalled the fear he had after ending his 55-year career. “For the first time in my life, I found myself in uncharted territory, sailing through unknown seas,” he declared.

In his interview with Pauley, Brokaw talks about how his diagnosis has humbled him. He admits: “I had a lot of problems. “In the past, I thought I could fight the difficulties in life. But as I got older, this problem got worse. But as I got older, that condition became a reality. The key is to manage it as best as possible.
From 1976 to 1981, Brokaw and Pauley co-hosted the NBC show This Morning. They talked as Brokaw published his autobiography, Never Give Up: A Tale of a Prairie Family, in tribute to his hardworking parents.
