Former NFL star and football coach John Curtis is the reason Kelly Curtis committed to sports as a career. However, she had a turbulent journey jumping from one sport to another, but he still supported her decision. Everyone knows that Skeleton wasn’t the first sport Kelly picked up while she was doing track and field.
Kelly first excelled in track and basketball at Princeton High School. He then went to Tulane University, but transferred to his father’s alma mater, Springfield College, and his sport was the heptathlon. He moved to New York and attended St. Lawrence University.
However, his trainer in Springfield advised him to fight for the sled. “She placed third on the country women’s bobsled team and has competed in several events and I think she could be in the Olympics,” John told NJ.com.
Afterwards, Kelly revealed to her father that she would be taking Drop Bobsled and Skeleton. ‘I said what? That’s where you’re headed, right?’” Curtis recalled. “So her mom and I wished her the best and told her to keep chasing her dream.”
John’s support of Kelly’s dream of continuing to find her calling led her to the 2022 Winter Olympics as the first black American athlete on Team USA Skeleton.

John Curtis has been married to his wife Deb Smith since June 4, 1978. They met in 1947 at a bar called Wednesday’s on the Upper East Side. John and Deb welcomed Kelly as their youngest child. Deb worked at the fitness community in Princeton that Kelly used to attend when she was young.
Speaking to NJ.com, John revealed: “Kelly grew up in that environment. She was doing 200+ pound leg presses. People gathered around and watched whatever she was doing. Because her mother knew that Kelly was not only strong but also fast, she told her, ‘Run to the circus and you’ll make money there.'”
Kelly has two older brothers, Jay Curtis and James Curtis, and an older sister named Kitty Curtis Milfort.
