In 2021, Kat privately revealed to her family that she was a lesbian. That’s when she publicly shared the news before an episode of her mother’s reality show, The Real Housewives of Orange County.
Kat and Max also found that isolation from the COVID pandemic was a big factor in their journeys of self-discovery. “That’s when I started to question my sexuality. I wasn’t around my friends 24/7. That’s how I started to understand who I am in relation to who I am with my friends,” Kat said.

Discussing her recent outing with PEOPLE, Kat also stated that she feels more comfortable sharing her sexuality in a public forum because of her older sister, Max. To that, Max said how happy he is to be able to inspire her younger sister.
Though according to what Kat’s parents shared with PEOPLE, the news briefly sparked tension between the sisters.
