My favorite iPhone 14 feature is one Apple has barely talked about

Over the past 14 years, I’ve bought an iPhone of every generation; I am no stranger to Apple and its ecosystem. Heck, I even always make sure to reserve the iPhone to make sure I get my device on launch day (it’s become my yearly tradition). Like many people, I pre-ordered the dark purple iPhone 14 Pro, because the Pro line had too many new features that I didn’t want to miss out on. From the crazy Dynamic Island, always-on screen and 48-megapixel camera, it’s a fantastic mobile device.

But I think one of my favorite features of the iPhone 14 Pro is not something completely new. In fact, it’s been around for the past few years, ever since Apple released the iPhone 12 series. Although Apple barely talked about it for the iPhone 14 series, it’s one major game-changing feature I can’t live without: MagSafe.

What is MagSafe?

If you’re not familiar with MagSafe, that’s okay; again, Apple doesn’t talk about it much these days. Originally, MagSafe was only used on MacBooks, where the charging cable “attached” to the MacBook’s charging port via a magnet. This came in handy because if someone were to trip over the charging cable, the MagSafe bit would easily allow the cable to exit the charging port, so the laptop wouldn’t fall to the ground. Apple replaced MagSafe in USB-C MacBooks for a few years before bringing it back in the form of MagSafe 3 in the 2021 MacBook Air lineup, as well as the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros starting in 2021.

However, since iPhone 12, Apple has added MagSafe as a hardware feature to iPhones, including the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 lines. MagSafe is essentially a ring of magnets located on the back of the iPhone, which keeps your iPhone in place. your place with a variety of compatible MagSafe accessories, including wireless chargers, battery packs, phone mounts, mobile tripods, card holders and more.

Putting a case on your iPhone will weaken the force of the magnet, but luckily there are tons of MagSafe cases on the market. The MagSafe case has its own ring of magnets built into the case, so you can still protect your iPhone without losing use of all your favorite MagSafe accessories.

MagSafe is a great feature that I rely on every day

When MagSafe was first released, the range of accessories was quite limited with few options. There was an official MagSafe wireless charger and a MagSafe wallet from Apple, and some magnetic (not officially MagSafe) wireless batteries from other manufacturers (such as Anker and mophie). But as time has gone on, more accessory manufacturers have made MagSafe-compatible accessories, like PopSockets PopGrip for MagSafe and Joby’s GripTight GorillaPod for MagSafe, and it’s become something I really depend on every day when using my iPhone 14 Pro. Seriously, there isn’t a time every day that I’m alone. No using MagSafe in some shape or form.

The MagSafe accessory that only lives on my iPhone, besides the MagSafe case (I’m clumsy and don’t trust myself with a bare iPhone because things have happened), is the PopSockets PopGrip for MagSafe. A few years ago I thought PopSockets were the dumbest thing in the world, but then I bought one just to see what the fuss was about.

I glued that sticky plastic to the back of an old iPhone XS with a case on it and then I got it – I could use my phone with one hand! Well, sort of (I have small hands, and the 6.1-inch screen is barely manageable to begin with). It also made it much easier for me to take selfies as I would lose and drop my phone otherwise. But I absolutely hated how the PopSockets PopGrips stick together with glue, even though they can be removed, simply because I change the case. a lot of.

When PopSockets launched their line of MagSafe accessories, I let out a whoop of joy: finally! Instead of a small circular puck that sticks to your smartphone or case, it’s now a larger, tablet-like panel that has a magnetic circle and line below it, helping it align perfectly with MagSafe on iPhone 12. and later.

Sure, it’s bigger and will cover more of the back of your iPhone or case, but I’m fine with it because it comes off so easily. I’ve amassed a large collection of PopSockets PopTops (collectible PopGrips tops) because I like to switch them up too, especially for my trips to Disneyland. It’s pretty hard now for me to use any smartphone without a PopSocket, and MagSafe made it a complete lifesaver. I can easily take it off if I need to put it on a wireless charger or switch to another accessory without removing the PopSocket or case.

So when does my MagSafe PopSocket disconnect? I spend a lot at Disneyland and if I spend all day in the parks, I may need to take the battery out towards the end of the day to charge my iPhone. Although I carry a regular battery (the kind that requires charging cables) in case my husband needs to use it, I prefer to use MagSafe batteries. My current favorites are Anker’s MagGo 622 (with folding back cover that doubles as a stand) and the MagGo 633 (MagSafe wireless charging stand with removable battery). Anker has also just released a new MagGo battery with a built-in PopSocket, which I’ve added to my repertoire. I love the convenience of wirelessly charging my phone while I’m there and the MagSafe keeps the battery in place too. You no longer have to tangle with cables! And now the integrated PopSocket allows me to have a good grip on my phone while charging it.

I also have a MagSafe car mount in the dash of my car, so I just take the PopSocket off and put it in my magnetic car mount while I’m driving. I used to use those universal car mounts that lock your phone in place, but the MagSafe is so much easier when I have to remove it to use Apple Pay while driving. Another MagSafe accessory that I like to use is my Joby GorillaPod for MagSafe, since I use my iPhone 14 Pro for almost all of my work photography. This magnetic tripod has proven to be a useful tool when I need to shoot products and have no one to help me shoot.

As you can see, there hasn’t been a time when I haven’t used MagSafe with my iPhone in the past few years. I think it’s one of the most useful new additions to the iPhone in recent memory, and it’s really been a game changer for me.

Where is MagSafe for Android?

I’ve been using MagSafe on my iPhone since Apple introduced it two years ago. At this time it has become an integral part of my daily life and I don’t think I can do without it. As I start to delve into the world of Android devices, I have to wonder: why isn’t there a MagSafe-like feature on other smartphone manufacturers?

As far as I know, only Realme tested it a year ago, called MagDart. However, Realme doesn’t sell phones in the US, and the MagDart system never really took off in the same way that Apple’s MagSafe did. In the world of smartphones, companies are always copying each other in terms of hardware and software features, so I’m surprised MagSafe isn’t something Android brands (at least in the US) already copied in the last two years.

Again, since I use MagSafe every day, I have a hard time without it. While I try to use Android more and more, it’s something I really miss on my iPhone 14 Pro. Also, I would have to replace some of my accessories, like the MagSafe car mount and batteries, with more universal versions.

Apple may not be talking much about MagSafe these days, but it’s still one of the iPhone 14’s best qualities, and something the Android world has yet to successfully copy.
