Extreme heat will hit much of France for several days.
Meteo France placed 45 departments under an orange heat wave watch on Thursday, located in a wide belt stretching from the southwest to the Hauts-de-France, as intense heat will affect much of France for several days.
A “very intense heat wave” will first affect the regions from the south-west to the Pays de la Loire, “extending an episode of a heat wave that will last in much of France, characterized by mainly hot and even scorching nights”, said Meteo France. .

“The hot wave of this episode will be long lasting”
Temperatures topped 35°C in the Paris area and the south-west district on Thursday afternoon, just a week after an intense but brief heat wave hit parts of France.
But the mercury will continue to rise strongly on Friday, with highs of “37° to 40°C, very locally 41°C to 42°C, in the Pays de la Loire from Poitou-Charentes to Aquitaine and much of Occitania, approaching probably to place records”.
Although a drop in the west and southwest is expected on Saturday, “this heat wave episode will be sustainable,” according to Météo France, waiting for a drop in temperatures in the middle of next week.
However, the intensity of this episode (maximum peak) “will be less than in 2019 and 2003, and the duration less than in 2003,” says the organization’s forecast.
