The hurricane could be put to the test by the emergency services of one of the states most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic in the United States.

Already heavily affected by the consequences of the coronavirus, Florida residents are not at the end of their punishment: the state is preparing this Sunday for the passage of Isaias, the hurricane that dumped heavy rains on the Bahamas on Saturday, before being downgraded to a tropical storm.

Forecasters believe that Isaías could regain strength and become a hurricane when it touches the Florida coast, where it will test the emergency services of one of the states most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic in the United States. Isaías, which was downgraded from a Category 1 hurricane to a tropical storm late Saturday, generated maximum winds of up to 110 km/h over the Florida Straits.

The Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) said the storm would become a hurricane overnight as it approaches southeastern Florida before moving toward the peninsula’s east coast. The region had already been hit by a violent squall of rain on Sunday morning.

“We will start to see the impacts of the storm tonight and then of course tomorrow, tomorrow night,” Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Saturday night. Palm Beach County issued a voluntary evacuation notice, he said.

According to the NHC, “While Isaias weakened after passing Andros Island in the Bahamas, it is expected to strengthen on Saturday night and Sunday morning as the cyclone moves through the warm waters of the Straits of Florida and the Gulf Stream”.

“Isaias is expected to remain a hurricane through Monday, followed by gradual weakening Monday night or Tuesday,” the organization added.

For its part, NASA has been closely monitoring the storm that could disrupt the return to Earth of the SpaceX crewed capsule after a two-month mission to the International Space Station (ISS). Crew Dragon will bring back two astronauts Sunday afternoon for a water landing off the Florida coast in the Gulf of Mexico, weather permitting.

At 11:34 p.m., the capsule began the process of leaving the ISS and landed in the water Sunday in the Gulf of Mexico at 6:41 p.m., according to the US space agency. A site near the north Florida city of Pensacola was selected as a “priority” landing site, with Panama City as an alternative if the seas were too rough or the winds too strong.

A test in times of Covid-19

Florida’s Republican governor declared a state of emergency Friday for the state’s east coast counties, Miami-Dade and Nassau, which President Donald Trump approved Saturday for funding. “This will help our state to quickly respond to any damage,” Ron DeSantis tweeted.

The passage of the hurricane to Florida comes at a time when this state in the southeastern United States is already facing a strong outbreak of the coronavirus epidemic. Florida reported 179 deaths related to the novel coronavirus in a single day on Saturday, slightly lower than the previous day’s record (257 deaths on Friday, 253 deaths on Thursday, 216 on Wednesday, 186 on Tuesday).

It also has more than 480,000 cases detected since the start of the pandemic, surpassing New York, which has long been the epicenter of the US spring epidemic, and second only to California, whose population is twice as large. Due to the weather, the state has had to close the testing centers for Covid-19, although they are often set up in one of the tents, in anticipation of the arrival of the hurricane, even if the testing centers in the counties remain open.
