Optical illusion using shadows leaves viewers stumped – can you guess what’s behind the ‘simple yet brilliant’ image?

The optical illusion confuses viewers as many try to guess what is behind it.

Artist Yves Lappert is behind the image, which was tagged a “simple but brilliant illusion” on Reddit.

Dozens of reddit users commented on the illusion, sharing their thoughts and how they were fooled by the image.

“No wonder it took me a moment. It’s a simple but effective illusion,” another user chimed in.

“At first I thought it was metallurgy and I was trying to figure out how it stays in place. So simple and amazing. I love how geometry is fascinating, even when it comes to simple repeating triangles,” wrote one Reddit user.

“The angle of the light and slope (against the wall should be) should be 60 degrees for the triangle to be equilateral. Perfect timing,” wrote another.

“My 10 year old figured it out in about 10 seconds. It took me longer,” another person wrote.

In reality, the illusion is a photograph of four wooden boards leaning against a wall.

The boards are leaning at the same angle, one below the other.

At the right angle of the sun’s fall, the shadows falling from the wooden planks create perfect-looking triangles.

Those who look at the photo and immediately see triangles wonder what they really see in the image.

But some did not immediately understand the illusion.

“I’m confused. It’s a great image, but what’s the illusion? How many seconds does it take people to ‘get it’?” wrote a Reddit user.

“This blew my mind,” wrote another.
