Larry “Axman” Roach got into racing early. He shared during a podcast interview that he will be racing on tight surfaces in Virginia. Larry watched his cousins run when he was about 10 years old. But as he got older, he started working on cars, eventually building his 1972 Nova. He explained to Dragzine: “Growing up, I had a couple of cousins who were about seven years older than me, I was about seven or eight, and they sixteen, and just watching them play with their cars in the street, somehow it became me, wanting to run away from them. I think that’s where I got the fever.”
He said he likes to drive from his car. Larry and his friends would often go to the bridge in Virginia at 12 or 1 in the morning and would run until the police chased them.
Larry was passionate about racing and had a 64 Chevy Nova that he would race in a 275 drag radial. But the engines would blow after every one or two races and it would cost him a fortune to fix them. After the race in Georgia, he and his wife went to his trailer and announced that he had retired from street racing for good.
But, No Prep Kings came to his town, which was only two hours from his home. There were only two places left to fill and he requested it and had to compete against almost 50 runners. However, on the day of the race, only a few people showed up, including him, they ran and secured a spot.
Larry shared that he enjoyed his life competing in No Prep. He said that he likes it because it brings him back to his roots. He raced at Kansas and earned enough points to run the rest of the show season.
Larry has the most recognizable cars in No Prep, as he has a massive ax on the front of his 1963 Chevy II and another on the back lid. After racing radials and events for two years, he gave up the small tires for the big ones.

Outside of racing, Larry “Axman” Roach owns a logging company. That’s where his name “Axman” comes from. As a boy in rural Virginia, he watched his father and uncle work cutting wood. So it was inevitable that he too would join the family business.
Larry explained to Dragzine: “Growing up where I grew up, living on a mile of dirt road, we were poor, looking back. When you grow up as a child, you don’t realize that you are poor and have no money. I mean, we ended up playing barefoot; We had no idea. We lived! We had family, that was all we had. So we live it!”
Larry shared in one of his YouTube videos that drag racing was 10 hour weeks, but his logging job was 60 or 70 hour weeks. He registered a company called Axman Enterprises, Inc. that handles his logging business, which was registered in December 2009 under Open Corporates.

Larry ‘Axman’ Roach is married to his wife Sarah. They have reportedly been married since July 2016 after getting engaged on New Year’s Day of the same year. He and his children are the parents of four children; Nitro (8 years old), Cam (5 years old) and Nova (3 years old). They are co-parents of his son Ryder (12), who comes from a previous relationship. In addition to caring for Larry’s children, he is also an active participant in the exercise.
Sarah worked with her father at the family restaurant in Altavista, Virginia. Her father, Matt Mattox, owned the place.
But Sarah plays a big part in Larry’s drag racing business. Larry bragged that his wife keeps his racing program together. He told No Prep that people don’t see how much she does to keep her team together. She keeps everything together from loading the car, tying it down and packing while he’s on the phone trying to run the business along with racing.

Sarah is a die-hard fan of drag racing. And her children are also on the same path. They compete with each other by giving names. For Larry, it was the best experience to see his children walk with the stars he saw on television.
Larry and his wife Sarah also have a YouTube channel called ‘Axman & Axlady’. The last video of him was Sarah’s birthday when she turned 35 on New Year’s Day.
