Shasha Damilola Alesh, better known by her stage name Dice Ailes, has been criticized by her fans and Twitter users for using a photo of Sarah Baartman as the cover of her new song.
Many of us have never even heard of Sarah Baartman, but her story is eerily similar to the experiences of generations of Black women in the future.
Sarah Baartman was one of many Khoi women who were visited by European scientists and forced to strip naked to satisfy the perverse curiosity of the Europeans. These scientists brought with them the image of these women as primitive and sexually insatiable. This delusion has managed to trickle down to the mouth-breathing asshole in the bar, who taunts us with suggestive admissions that “I’ve never been with a black woman before,” and then accepts this image of our sexuality as primal, serving to further dehumanize us and assign us the role of entertainers.
