It is considered the largest braderie in Europe. The Braderie de Lille is a large garage sale that traditionally takes place on the weekend of the first Sunday in September. This year it was supposed to take place on September 5 and 6. But it was canceled due to the health situation caused by Covid-19, the North Prefecture and the city council announced on Monday.

“In light” of the ban on any gathering of more than 5,000 people and “the uncertainty surrounding the health situation at the outset, it is with a heavy heart that we have to announce the cancellation of Braderie 2020,” according to a joint press release. liberation by the prefect, Michel Lalande, and the mayor of PS, Martine Aubry, was narrowly re-elected at the end of June.

The same weekend the “Traders’ Confusion” will take place. The Lille City Council has been working in collaboration with the trade association and the representatives of the merchants and will “soon detail the modalities”.

In 2016 it already had to be canceled due to the terrorist threat after the attack on July 14 in Nice. It was the first cancellation of the event in the last 70 years and “tears” at the town hall. Then, in 2017, the perimeter was reduced, which was expanded in 2018, with an extensive security system made up of 3,000 police, gendarmes and the army, and the air and emergency services were reinforced.

But uncertainty has existed since the beginning of the Covid-19 epidemic. Last April, in a period of total restriction, Martine Aubry was deemed “difficult” for the first time to hold this popular event in September. Then, in mid-June, she assured that she “wants the sale to be carried out normally in September”, but only “if security allows it (tait)”.
