Nvidia’s RTX graphics cards may have some stiff competition from AMD’s RX 5700 cards, but they still dominate when it comes to performance. With the Super versions of the RTX 2070 and 2080 offering better value than ever, now is the time to buy a new graphics card. But which one should you choose?

We’ve had our hands on just about every RTX graphics card since it was released, including the latest of Nvidia’s Turing upgrade cards, the RTX 2080 Super. Before we look at how they perform in the real world, let’s take a look at the specs, which give a pretty good idea of what to expect from these cards.

Like the RTX 2070 Super and RTX 2060 Super before it, the RTX 2080 Super has seen a modest increase in CUDA cores, along with a clock boost of over 100 MHz. But it also saw a jump in clock speeds. memory, which helped bring its overall throughput closer to 500 GBps. All of this comes at the cost of heat and power consumption though, with the RTX 2080 Super now rated at the same 250W as the 2080 Ti.
The 2070 Super still lags behind the standard 2080, though its improved clock speed and CUDA core count over the standard 2070 narrows the gap considerably.
However, as with all computer hardware, the specifications tell only part of the story. When we got to grips with these new Turing GPUs in the real world, the performance of the 2080 Super, 2080, and 2070 Super was much closer than we’d like to see.
The 2080 Super is arguably the most powerful card of the three, but the margins aren’t as wide as we’d hoped. The fact that the 2080 Super sells for $100 less than the original 2080’s asking price is its only real saving grace. You get more power for less money, which is always a great deal. That is, except when the 2070 Super performs as close to the original 2080 and $200 less than the new Super variant.
The 2070 Super is arguably the best card for the money in the entire RTX lineup. It outperforms AMD’s RX 5700 XT, outperforms the $650 Radeon VII quite often, and can handle RTX features like ray tracing and deep learning super sampling (DLSS).
Lightning tracing and DLSS
In addition to increasing the clock and number of CUDA cores, Nvidia’s new Super cards have also increased the number of RT and Tensor cores that enable ray tracing or DLSS on the RTX GPU. Although not huge, the RTX 2070 Super saw an 11% increase in RT and Tensor cores. While this won’t make running high-end ray tracing effects much easier, it should help reduce the performance impact of ray tracing.
On the other hand, the number of RT and Tensor cores in the RTX 2080 Super only increased by a little over 4%. It’s negligible enough that we won’t see any real improvement in ray tracing or DLSS performance. More is better in this case, and it’s certainly an improvement over the standard 2080, but the gap between the 2070 Super and 2080 Super is significantly smaller on this front than between the 2070 and 2080, making the 2070 Super , again, more of an update on its non-Super variants of the 2080 Super.
2070 is a big king, unless you have a lot of money

All RTX Super cards are an improvement over their predecessors and therefore unanimously represent better value for money. Still, there are cards that represent bigger improvements than others, and the RTX 2080 Super just isn’t one of them.
While the raw performance crown in this case goes to the RTX 2080 Super, the 2070 Super simply offers better value for money. If you can find the RTX 2080 at a lower price while retailers are selling out, it might be worth buying. But if you’re interested in money, save $200 and get the 2070 Super.
