Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra vs. Galaxy S20 Ultra

Following the launch of the Galaxy S20 Ultra in March, Samsung launched the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, the big brother to the also recently announced Note 20. Both new phones follow last year’s Note 10, which was our favorite Android phone. of 2019

The Note 20 Ultra certainly has a lot to live up to, but it lived up to expectations, even if some people find it too big. It’s an improvement over the Galaxy Note 10 (and Note 10 Plus) in almost every department, with a higher-resolution display, more powerful processor, more capable camera system, and bigger battery. But how does it compare to the Galaxy S20 Ultra?

To help you decide which Samsung Ultra is right for you, we compare the two devices in six key categories. If you take a closer look at these two amazing devices, you should be able to tell which one is better suited for your needs.

Design, screen and durability

Galaxy S20 Ultra selfie camera

The Galaxy S20 Ultra and Note 20 Ultra are beautiful smartphones, but in different ways. Both have a large 6.9-inch edge-to-edge AMOLED display with hardly any bezels. However, the S20 Ultra has a more curved design, with rounded corners and edges. In contrast, the Note 20 Ultra retains the slightly sharper, more angular body that defined the Note series.

Which aesthetic approach is best really depends on your personal taste. Needless to say, the displays on both phones are impressive, with a 3200 x 1440 resolution running at around 511 ppi. This delivers some of the clearest images and video you’ll see on any smartphone, made even better by a smooth 120Hz refresh rate.

Both phones are also very large, although the S20 Ultra is a bit taller, wider, and thicker. It’s also about a half-ounce heavier, which can make it a bit awkward to hold. That’s not to say that the Note 20 Ultra can be easily operated with one hand, it’s just that it’s a bit smaller and lighter.

The S20 Ultra and Note 20 Ultra are IP68 certified, making them resistant to dust and shallow water submersion for up to 30 minutes. Considering the barely noticeable design differences, this means the first round is a draw.

Performance, battery life and charging

Ultra base of the Galaxy Note 20Andy Boxall/Digital Trends

Both phones offer very similar performance, but the Note 20 Ultra has the advantage of running on a newer processor. It ships with the Snapdragon 865 Plus in the United States and comes with the Exynos 990 in other parts of the world. The S20 Ultra runs on an older Snapdragon 865, which won’t make much of a difference in practice, but it could mean the Note 20 Ultra handles certain workloads a bit more easily than the S20 Ultra.

Also, both smartphones have 12GB of RAM, although the S20 Ultra lineup offers a 16GB model, so any computing differences can be offset by buying the S20 with extra RAM. The Note 20 Ultra offers 256GB of standard internal storage and can be purchased in a 512GB version, while the S20 Ultra is split into 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB models.

When it comes to battery, the S20 Ultra has a slight advantage. It is equipped with a powerful 5000 mAh battery while the Note 20 Ultra is powered by a 4500 mAh cell. In practice, it doesn’t make much of a difference, as our review of the Note 20 Ultra found that it can last a full day with heavy use. Even so, the S20 Ultra seems to offer a little more power, something that could be important for those who can’t charge as fast. The S20 Ultra also offers 45W fast charging, while the Note 20 Ultra handles just 25W, giving it another slight edge. Both phones also offer 15W wireless charging.

Given the subtle difference in battery life, we’ll give the S20 Ultra a narrow win. Being able to buy it with 16GB of RAM also allows it to run slightly faster than the Note 20 Ultra, making it a superior smartphone in terms of performance for those who can afford an upgrade.

Camera

Ultra Cam module of the Galaxy Note 20Andy Boxall/Digital Trends

The Note 20 Ultra is certainly better than the Note 20 when it comes to the camera. It comes with a 108MP main camera lens, while the standard Note 20 only offers a 12MP version. The thing is, its main wide-angle lens is the same as the one on the S20 Ultra, which also boasts the same 108MP.

Both phones have three rear camera lenses, with the same 108MP wide-angle lens complemented by a 12MP telephoto and 12MP ultra-wide in the case of the Note 20 Ultra. On the other hand, the S20 Ultra has a 48MP telephoto lens and a 12MP ultra-wide angle. This larger telephoto lens gives the S20 Ultra a 100x zoom, as opposed to the Note 20 Ultra’s 50x zoom.

As we noted in our S20 Ultra review, the 100x zoom is more of a gimmick than anything else, as photos become grainy when shot at their maximum capacity. The 50x zoom should be more than enough, so few if any people will actually miss out on photographing a pixelated tree from a mile away.

In fact, our review of the Note 20 Ultra found that its camera offers a bit more versatility than the S20 Ultra, offering an excellent main sensor, periscope zoom, wide-angle lens, and night mode, as well as very good selfies. In terms of video recording, both are capable of recording 8K video at 24fps, so you can count on both to capture stunning cinematic footage, assuming you have an 8K TV available.

This round is a draw. The S20 Ultra may offer a more powerful telephoto lens, but we found the Note 20 Ultra does a slightly better job of capturing great photos in most conditions.

software and updates

Software Samsung Galaxy S20

The Galaxy S20 Ultra and Note 20 Ultra run on Samsung’s One UI 2 operating system, layered on top of Android 10. Given the large dimensions of both devices, working on OneUI 2 allows for a more intuitive user experience, with apps and icons bigger ones that facilitate navigation.

It is also likely that the two phones will receive updates at the same time. Since both are Samsung devices, users may have to wait longer than, say, Google Pixel owners to get the underlying updates. However, Samsung has been quick to roll out updates to improve the S20 Ultra’s camera.

Special features

Back of the S Pen of the Galaxy Note 20 UltraAndy Boxall/Digital Trends

The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and Galaxy S20 Ultra are 5G phones, and the S20 Ultra supports all major 5G bands. The Note 20 Ultra also supports 5G, and according to the FCC certificate, it will also support mmWave 5G, the fastest band.

Of course, the Note 20 Ultra comes with a stylus. The Note series has long been promoted as a smartphone for more professional or creative users, with a stylus that supports a wider range of applications. Whether you use your phone for work or projects, the stylus makes a significant difference, providing greater ease and precision than is available with your finger.

Also, reports have suggested that the Note 20 Ultra will be built to stream Xbox games, a first for smartphones. Combined with its increased workability, we give the Note 20 Ultra this round.

Price and availability

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra starts at $1,400, while the 512GB model costs $1,600. You can find it with all operators and even in stores like Walmart, Amazon or Best Buy.

The price of the most basic version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is $1299. Just like the Galaxy S20 Ultra, you can get this device from any phone provider and buy it from well-known online stores.

Overall Winner: Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra

Andy Boxall/Digital Trends

We have to crown the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra as the clear winner, although there are no major differences between the two devices. You’ll thank yourself for buying this spectacular huge Android phone. This phone comes with a useful and versatile S Pen, matches the S20 Ultra in essential areas, and will easily last you for years to come.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra remains an excellent option for a high-quality phone that packs a lot of valuable features. Because it has a longer battery life, along with the option to upgrade to 16GB of RAM, it’s a popular choice and you won’t go wrong buying it. As beautiful as the S20 Ultra is, it doesn’t have the customizability and therefore durability of the Note 20 Ultra, making it the best option of any Android phone brand on the market today.
