SkyRunner flying car soars just about as high in the sky as its sticker price

SkyRunner, the company responsible for giving dune buggies the power to fly, is back with a new model that retails for $139,000. The goal is to provide off-road capability with the thrill of extended flight, and the vehicle has even been approved by the FAA this time.

The hybrid composite chassis, including carbon fiber body panels, uses a Polaris ProStar 1000 engine for off-road gaming and a Rotax 914 UL light sport engine for air sports. The new SkyRunner can reach air speeds of up to 40 mph over a distance of 120 nautical miles. When the driver is ready to land, the wing stows in the bag behind the passenger.

“We set out to build the ultimate adventure vehicle, but found that it fills big gaps as a tool,” said SkyRunner CEO Stewart Hamel. “Initially designed as a toy, the market has turned the SkyRunner into a high-end, low-cost, multi-modal tool for ranchers, law enforcement, border security, and even Department of Defense agencies. With operating costs of approximately $50 per hour, the SkyRunner will take you where no truck or UTV can, at a fraction of the cost of a helicopter.”

The vehicle relies on Maxxis Bighorn tires and FOX Piggyback shocks to handle just about any surface, but with just 450 feet of track, the SkyRunner can fly through the air. However, all this excitement comes at a high price, higher than the previous version. The SkyRunner retails for $139,000 and can be purchased direct from the factory.

SkyRunner presents the flying buggy

The dream of a car capable of driving comfortably every day and taking to the skies on wings has been a part of the American psyche for generations.

Until recently, this ambitious goal was unattainable. But now the richest among us will be able to achieve this lofty goal, as SkyRunner introduces its flying car, capable of offroad driving and flying.

The SkyRunner designed the car to appeal to rescuers and recreation enthusiasts with its reflex paragliding wing technology that allows it to transform from car to plane in three minutes.

Stewart Hamel, CEO of SkyRunner, says: “Open fields, grassy areas and secluded beaches will be the tracks of choice.” Don’t get too excited though, backyard flyers; SkyRunner owners who wish to fly will first need to obtain a flight license, which requires 12 hours of flying with a certified flight instructor.

Once airborne, the SkyRunner will reach a top speed of 55 mph. In the field, though, it’ll be able to go from 0-60 in 4.3 seconds and hit 115 mph thanks to its 125-horsepower Ford 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine.

SkyRunner debuted the all-terrain steering wheel at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. No other dune buggy, for this price of $119,000 or otherwise, will float in the air for more than a few seconds. Given its capabilities, the SkyRunner is a steal.
