Can you tell which of these tables is bigger? This optical illusion has people stumped

CAN YOU TELL WHICH OF THESE TABLES IS BIGGER?

To the untrained eye, the two tables are completely different in size and shape.

This confusing image was created by Roger Shepard and tricks our brains into thinking tables are different sizes and shapes.

The left one is obviously long and narrow and the right one is square, right?

This is actually an optical illusion and both tables are exactly the same size.

The mystifying image, known as the Shepard Table Illusion, was first posted in 1981 by Roger Shepard, who called it Turning the Tables and is now trending on Reddit.

The illusion tricks our brains into seeing two tables as different using the positions of the legs, reports Digg.

The one that seems longer is placed vertically, while the other one is horizontally, tricking us into thinking that they are not the same.

However, when the leg boards are removed and placed on top of each other, it becomes clear that they are the same shape.

According to Shepard, our depth perception is easily fooled, and the effect is amplified when parallelograms grow legs and become tables.

New York University Neural Sciences researchers say this is because we want to see everything as a 3D object, making it difficult for the brain to interpret two-dimensional images.

Table tops still look different in shape when colored parallelograms are added

They said: “If there is an opportunity to interpret a drawing or painting as a three-dimensional object, we do it.

“The two boards above have exactly the same two-dimensional shape on the page, except for the rigid rotation.

“No one believes this when they first see the illusion. The illusion shows that we are not seeing a two-dimensional shape drawn on the page, but rather a three-dimensional shape of an object in space.”

The shapes are twisted and the legs removed to show the illusion.

Because we are focused on seeing three-dimensional objects, we accept what we see without it to the extent that we see identical shapes as different from each other.

Other optical illusions that trick your brain include a black and white spiral that activates a Van Gogh painting and a cryptic image that confuses people about the color of dresses.

Now we can see that the tabletops are actually the same shape and size.
