Design, screen, durability.
While the iPhone 12 has the same 6.1-inch screen size as the XR, the new iPhone 12 has an OLED display, while the XR uses a regular LCD display. The OLED screen brings a richer visual experience to the new iPhone 12, since OLED screens have true black color and a wider contrast ratio. It also has a much higher pixel density than the XR screen, so it’s going to look sharper every time.
iPhone 12 brings back one of the most acclaimed designs in iPhone history, the iPhone 4, ditching the beveled sides in favor of an aluminum frame and glass back. We found the aluminum frame felt a bit light in an almost “budget” way, but given the savings compared to the Pro models, it’s hard to complain. Considering that the iPhone XR design has been around for three years now, we’re all for this beautiful resurrection of retro design. The iPhone 12 also features new Ceramic Shield technology that Apple says will bring a new level of strength to your smartphone’s glass. Apple claims this will lead to better drop performance and fewer broken screens.
iPhone 12 comes in a rainbow of brilliant colors that are absolutely stunning in person. So if you love expressing yourself through your phone, there are countless options to choose from.

iPhone 12 launched with Apple’s revolutionary new A14 processor. We take a look at how this new 5nm chip performs in the latest iPad Air. It represents a huge leap forward in performance, with almost 12 billion transistors. Apple promises incredible speeds and performance with this new chip, and given Apple’s past performance, we believe them.
The iPhone XR outperforms the A12 Bionic from 2018. The A12 is certainly a powerful processor that can stand on its own, but with leaps in processing power every year, two years certainly makes a difference. Plus, if you’re looking to buy a new device today, it’s usually best to pick the one that will last the longest, and Apple’s A14 Bionic will keep iOS running smoothly for years to come.
We found that the iPhone 12 performed as expected when it came to battery life. It will easily last the day on a full charge. In “normal” use, I would usually end the day with 30% left. Even with heavy battery use, it’s likely to leave plenty of room to work. Both phones include fast charging and wireless charging, although the iPhone 12 also has faster 18W charging.
Coupled with excellent battery life and a faster processor, this is another win for the iPhone 12.

Camera
While the iPhone XR has a single 12-megapixel rear lens, the iPhone 12 has dual wide and ultra-wide rear lenses, both 12MP each, giving it an instant edge. The iPhone 12 also supports night mode, which is not supported on the iPhone XR. While the XR will still take good photos in low light, it won’t be able to match the low-light software performance of the iPhone 12.
The iPhone XR and iPhone have similar 4K and 1080p video recording capabilities, but the iPhone 12 also offers HDR video recording. While it’s not a huge update, it’s worth noting.
Both the iPhone 12 and iPhone XR have fantastic and nearly identical cameras and photo/video performance, but camera technology has come a long way in two years. The iPhone 12 will absolutely be the winner here.

Both iPhones are capable of running the latest firmware, which is iOS 14. Since both devices will receive identical updates in the coming years, it’s a foregone conclusion that these devices are tied in this category.

The iPhone 12 supports 5G and is officially one of the first iPhones to support 5G. We’ve already taken a look at 5G, and while 5G speeds are a neat gimmick for fun, access to true 5G coverage is limited to certain large metropolitan areas. This shouldn’t detract from the reality that a 5G phone is more future-proof than one with just 4G LTE, but don’t get too carried away with the hype, just yet.
While both iPhone XR and iPhone 12 support wireless charging, iPhone 12 takes it to the next level with MagSafe for iPhone. Apple Watch users will be familiar with this technology that helps you match your charger to your device’s wireless charging coils. Apple hopes this will make charging easier and open up a whole new ecosystem of cases and chargers that can be magnetically attached to the back of the phone. There are only two cases available right now, and neither received stellar ratings when we reviewed their charging capabilities.

By comparison, the iPhone 12 and iPhone XR are relatively similar, especially when you compare their overall processing power and day-to-day performance. Still, if you want a phone that stands out, you can’t go wrong with the iPhone 12. The device has a beautiful design, supports 5G, has MagSafe charging, and has an amazing camera.
We want to emphasize that if you already own an iPhone XR, we recommend that you wait for the next cycle of new phones before buying another. If you’re in the market for a new phone and feel torn between these two Apple options, aim for the iPhone 12. The technology and design are innovative enough to last at least another update cycle or two.
