The increase in mortality is double for people born abroad than for those born in France in the period March-April 2020.

The increase in deaths caused by the coronavirus is more pronounced among people born in Africa, the Maghreb and Asia than in France, mainly because they live in populated areas, but also because many of them are “key workers” who have continued with their activities. Insee revealed this Tuesday.

France recorded 129,000 deaths from all causes in March and April, at the height of the coronavirus epidemic, up from 102,800 in the same period in 2019, an increase of 25%. However, depending on the country of birth there are large differences.

Thus, foreign-born deaths increased by 48 percent in that period compared to the same period in 2019, compared to 22 percent of French-born deaths, according to Insee data. The increase was higher for people born in Africa (+54% for deceased people born in the Maghreb, +114% for those born in other African countries) or in Asia (+91%).

minorities overrepresented in certain risk factors

For people born in Europe (excluding France) and in some of the countries of America or Oceania, the increase in the number of deaths is close to that registered for people born in France. This excess of deaths is explained by the fact that foreigners stay more in densely populated territories, especially in Île-de-France, the region most affected by Covid-19 (+92% of deaths in the March-April period compared to 2019) ).

Thus, a third of those born in the Maghreb and half of those born in other countries in Africa and Asia live in Île-de-France, compared to 16% of those born in France, says the Insee. Housing, use of public transportation, and occupancy, factors that can reduce social distancing options, also play a role.

According to Insee, people born in Africa and Asia have very little accommodation (between 1.3 and 1.6 rooms per person, compared to 1.8 for the total population) and tend to use public transport more.

In addition, 14% of the workers born in the North African country and 15% of those born in other African countries are “key workers” (health personnel, caregivers, paramedics, police, public transport, firefighters, vendors, delivery men, cleaning personnel…) who continued with their activities and were among those most exposed to the risk of contamination. Instead, 11% of the deceased were born in France.
