School closures in Maharashtra: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Thane, Raigad, Pune and Palghar districts due to heavy to very heavy rains. Based on this, the authorities have declared schools to be closed on Friday and Saturday in Palghar and Thane due to a state of red alert.

The order to close schools was issued by Palghar Collector Govind Bodke and his counterpart Thane Ashok Shingare. Meanwhile, collector Thane Ashok Shingare asked everyone to stay indoors due to the rain. Additionally, an ‘orange warning’ has been issued for Mumbai and Ratnagiri districts.

Red alert issued by IMD

A red warning has been issued for four districts: Thane, Raigad, Pune and Palghar as these areas can expect very heavy rain until Saturday. The weather warning also prompted authorities to declare Palghar and Thane out of school, and deploy National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams in six districts to mitigate the impact of rain-related damage.

Schools closed in these districts of Maharashtra

In addition to Thane and Palghar, a total of 355 schools in the hilly regions of Pune, including Ambegaon, Khed, Junnar, Bhor, Purandar, Mulshi and Maval Talukas will also be closed on Friday due to the weather. So far, no red warnings have been issued for any districts on Saturday, however, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Pune and Satara remain on orange alert status.

Weather conditions are expected to improve over the next 3-4 days in Mumbai, Thane and Palghar. Mumbai’s civil service Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporations said the city received an average of 27.5 mm of rain over the past 24 hours as of 8am on Friday.

School in Telangana closed due to heavy rain

Telangana Education Minister Sabitha Reddy has ordered due to heavy rain situation in the state and following the Minister’s directive, relevant government agencies have decided to declare a holiday on two days – 20 and 21 July 2023, for all educational institutions in the state.
