NFL on Fox look bad? There’s a workaround (or two)

Other than changing the channel on your television, we generally have little control over the technical aspects of what appears on the screen. We (usually) can’t control the resolution. We cannot control the number of frames per second.

And it’s even more frustrating when things don’t turn out the way we expected. Case in point: something is wrong with live sports on Fox. And it’s not just one sport. There is something wrong with the standard definition broadcast during the World Cup. This makes the NFL look bad on Fox.

As of today, I don’t know if it’s the number of frames per second. I don’t know if that’s a resolution. It could be both. But I know it’s evident on streaming, cable and live services. It’s so bad that my mom refuses to watch sports on Fox. You may not have this problem in your MSA (which is short for Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is how TV regions are divided up), in which case, consider yourself lucky.

The Fox Sports app on TV.

Is it Fox’s fault? Did my local Fox affiliate screw things up? I don’t know and it doesn’t really matter. It’s not that I don’t care why my Fox NFL broadcasts look bad, I care more about doing something about it. And I found some solutions.

Watch sports on Fox in 4K

The first solution to the poor quality of sports on Fox is the less acceptable of the two because it requires spending more money. But the simple fact is that when I have the option to watch something in 4K instead of the standard version, it looks better. And not just in the sense that there are more pixels on the screen, because at the end of the day, that’s what 4K is versus 1080p (or 1080i, but we’re not really going to get into that here), or even 720p resolution. .

The biggest difference for me when watching sports on Fox in 4K is that the frame rate issues go away. Things run as smooth as you’d expect at 60 frames per second, which should be a must for watching any sport, live or otherwise.

The only problem here is that the options are few when it comes to watching sports in 4K. I, like over 5 million people in the US, subscribe to YouTube TV. And its 4K Plus add-on is great, except for the price, which adds an extra $20 to your monthly bill. If you want to watch sports in 4K, you’ll need that plugin.

Unless you subscribe to FuboTV. It immediately costs more, but you don’t have to pay more for live sports in 4K either. That’s all.

Watch it on the Fox Sports app

Then there’s an option that should make more sense to more people because it shouldn’t cost you anything extra. If your NFL game on Fox looks bad and has such a dodgy frame rate, try watching it on the Fox Sports app on whatever platform you’re using. Every major streaming platform and probably every Smart TV operating system has access to the Fox Sports app. (Especially since Super Bowl 2023 is on Fox.)

You probably don’t need to sign up for any other subscriptions. If you already have a cable, satellite, or streaming subscription, you should be able to use it to log into the Fox Sports app and then watch your game there. What I found was that the Fox Sports app stream did not suffer from upstream induced frame rate issues.

To be clear, this is also not a completely satisfactory solution. I shouldn’t have to load another app to show me the same thing that the service I’m paying for shows me, just in lower quality.
