Soyapango mayor Nercy Montano gained instant fame, but for all the wrong reasons.
Montano was arrested on serious charges, including abuse of labor quotas, embezzlement of public funds and breach of duty to the detriment of public administration.

El Salvador’s National Civil Police arrested Montano in connection with illegal activities to influence political decisions in the country.
The mayor of Soyapan, Montaño, allegedly breached his duties to the detriment of the public administration to influence an important strategic position.
According to the Montana arrest warrant, the Public Ministry, with the support of the National Civil Police of El Salvador, denounced the crimes and its mission to protect the interests of society.
The President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, supported the population and local authorities and spoke out against the mayor of Soyapango.
President Bukele reacted to Montana’s capture by saying that corruption in the country was never touched and that officials from the same Party found ways to corrupt the government.
He assured that he will support the police and authorities to take legal measures against corruption and abuse of power. The president said:
If we want to grow as a society, we must know that this is a necessity and an inevitability. We must eradicate the bad so that the good can advance.
However, several ordinary people, sectors of the national opposition and human rights organizations do not support President Bukele. They are dissatisfied with some of his harsh decisions in the country.

The National Civil Police of El Salvador arrested the mayoress of Soyapango under investigation for her involvement in the embezzlement of labor quotas and allegations of corruption.
However, it’s hard to see if Montano will face jail time or walk free after the investigation.
The country’s politicians, including political parties, have already entered into controversy after the Salvadoran government authorized the suspension of certain freedoms and guarantees.
The government has suspended some freedom rights to facilitate the deployment of the army and police on the streets.
Few were unhappy with the government’s decision, particularly human rights activists, including sections of the national opposition.
Although the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, was very proud to fight gangs, the opposition and human rights organizations opposed the idea.
Many common citizens were not satisfied with the harsh rule of their government.
