News Rina Sawwayama

After releasing her critically acclaimed debut album “Sawayama” in 2020, Rina Sawayama has announced her next product. On September 2, Dirty Hit will release “Hold the Girl”.

In addition to announcing the album, Rina also released the album’s lead track, the explosive country-pop song “This Hell”.

Before starting the first line of “This Hell”, Rina begins the song with a tribute to Shania Twain. Between glam-rock riffs, Rina sings references to gay pop stars, using phrases like, “Damn, what did Britney, Lady Di and Whitney do.”

The song was co-written by Rina, Vixen, Paul Epworth and Lauren Aquilina (Demi Lovato, Little Mix), and co-produced by “Sawayama” producers Clarence Clarity and Paul Epworth (Adele, Rihanna).

The upcoming album “Hold the Girl” was written and recorded over the past 18 months with the help of Epworth, Stuart Price (Dua Lipa, The Killers, Madonna), Marcus Andersson (Demi Lovato, Ashnikko) and longtime colleagues Clarity and Aquilina. According to reports, “Hold the Girl” represents an evolution of her music, mixing inspiration from several sub-pop genres to deliver a powerful and direct message.

The new single’s author, Rina, said: “I had so much fun writing ‘This Hell’.” I wanted to create a fun and ironic country-pop song because I’ve been listening to a lot of female country artists over the past few years. For me, the essence of country music is enjoyment, an excellent story, and a true depiction of the author’s life.

Having spent my entire career daydreaming about collaborating with Paul Epworth, when we finished this song in one day, I knew it was fate. I tried to include as many famous examples from popular culture as possible, but the song is so much more.

According to her, “this is an important song for me considering that human rights are being taken away from minorities at a rapid rate in the name of traditional religious beliefs, specifically I was thinking about the rights that are being taken away from the LGBTQ community when I wrote this song.”

Wrapping up a two-episode performance at Coachella and a sold-out US and UK tour, Rina also revealed plans for a UK and Ireland tour. The tour begins in Newcastle at O2 Town Hall in October and travels to London, ending with a performance at Brixton Academy.
