The metaverse: buzzword or major paradigm shift? Right now, there’s probably a little bit from column A and a little bit from column B. Sure, there are companies that want to embrace your metaverse strategy (as long as you don’t ask for too much detail) because they don’t want to be seen as lost. At the same time, there are other companies (including Meta, ex-Facebook) moving full steam ahead when it comes to embracing this new technology.
According to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the metaverse will be a virtual version of the Internet where “you’re in the experience, not just looking at it.” The company is working on everything from digital avatars to VR headsets that can detect and broadcast your facial expressions.
According to Matthew Ball, author of the book the metaverseThe metaverse is “a massively scaled, interoperable network of real-time rendered 3D virtual worlds that can be synchronously and persistently experienced by an unlimited number of users with an individual sense of presence and continuity of data such as identity, history, rights, objects, communications, and payments.”
You know? If you haven’t, or if, like the rest of us, you’re still trying to think of what that would look like, don’t worry—help is at hand. Whether it’s renderings of the necessary technology, images of possible virtual worlds, usage examples, or just a look at some of the ethical and technical conundrums we may soon be facing, here are seven movies to help.

Ready Player One (2018)

It’s the scene where Tom Cruise’s character, boss John Anderton, walks through a futuristic mall, while personalized ads blare from video screens, addressing him by his name.
Personalized ads, of course, are nothing new in the 2022 world when it comes to the internet. But for the most part they haven’t spilled over into the real world. That’s something the metaverse could change.
Whether it’s advertising that’s more immersive in virtual worlds (for example, as your 3D avatar wanders virtual malls) or augmented ads that compete with ads in the physical world, it seems clear that targeted ads are sure to grow big in the metaverse world.
A fascinating recent post by a veteran VR and AR entrepreneur made the case, calling for “immersion rights” for future denizens of the metaverse. Among them? The right to “experiential authenticity” to guard against this sort of thing. Everything is usefully returned. minority report. However, the virtual worlds are also training grounds that allow Neo, Morpheus, and their vinyl-clad companions to practice various skills.
Matrix helped articulate these two visions of what vast virtual worlds could mean: an opium for the masses, or a limitless world to refine and enhance human potential. The metaverse could be both. We guess it depends on whether we take the red pill or the blue pill.
Total Recall (1990)

Dick, is about a construction worker who basically takes a vacation to himself: he visits a neurotech company that promises to implant exciting false memories into his brain, in which the protagonist sees himself as a spy visiting Mars. For our money, the results are one of the best movies in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s back catalogue.
Although the idea of false memories is different from virtual worlds, there is no doubt that a compelling use case for the metaverse will be to allow people to lead alternate, parallel existences in massive virtual worlds populated by large numbers of people. We’re already seeing some versions of this with MMORPGs and high-grossing games like GTA V In the real world. But it will only grow in the metaverse, especially as it begins to factor in widespread virtual reality and the ability to earn a living within virtual realms.
It’s no coincidence that some metaverse pioneers are reviewing names full recall as a source of inspiration in interviews.
Avatar (2009)

Two years before James Cameron’s record-breaking film Avatar was announced, a group called the Accelerating Studies Foundation released a far-ahead-of-the-curve report called The Metaverse Roadmap, which outlines what the 3D internet might look like in the far, delusional year of the future, 2016.
While the conversation about the metaverse has certainly increased in recent years, Avatar It came at an interesting time in the history of technology where, as the report on the Roadmap to the Metaverse makes clear, ideas on the subject began to flourish. Other life was making waves at the time as a sort of metaverse, while the newly released Google Street View showed us that digitally recreating a world, and then being able to rotate around it at will, was doable.
AvatarThe plot, in which humans remotely control Na’vi alien bodies on a distant planet, is included in many of these ideas being circulated. It gave them a futuristic look, sure, but the topic of virtual incarnation would only become more important in the metaverse over the next few years. And, while Cameron’s film didn’t coin the term “avatar,” it certainly introduced its current usage to a much broader audience.
Single Boy (2021)

As a relatively light comedy flick that looks at the metaverse through positive rosy eyes, visually stunning. free boy more of a palette cleaner on this list than a serious lesson in how the metaverse will work.
But if Mark Zuckerberg and his ilk can give us a virtual Ryan Reynolds to hang out with, we can only wish them luck in their metaverse ambitions…
