Police Fear Babysitter Charged in Toddler’s Death May Have More Victims

After an investigation into the death of a young child revealed another victim, authorities believe a babysitter accused of murder may have hurt more children in her care, police said.

Heather Greenman, 37, of Beaumont, California, was initially arrested June 29 on charges of child abuse and child abuse resulting in death, according to an online statement from the Beaumont Police Department (BPD). Prosecutors on Monday also charged the nanny with first-degree murder after the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office reviewed the case. Greenman was booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Center, where she is being held on $1 million bond, according to jail records.

BPD said the investigation into Greenman is ongoing. Said Marcedes Cashmer, BPD public information officer news week in an email Thursday that it was unclear how the deceased girl’s family found Greenman or how many times she was hired to babysit.

“It is unknown how many times, but she was in the care of a nanny for several months prior to the incident,” Cashmer said.

Greenman’s investigation began April 26 after the Riverside County Coroner’s Office notified BPD of the death of a 15-month-old boy, who suffered a head injury while in the custody of a babysitter. The caretaker, identified as Greenman, told police the boy suffered fatal injuries after the fall. The toddler was in Greenman’s care at a babysitting home on Barolo Way in Beaumont, about 75 miles east of Los Angeles.

During the 911 call, Greenman told dispatchers that the boy he was caring for “fell while running” and hit his head. The boy was taken to an area hospital for swelling in his head and bleeding in his brain, but later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, BPD said.

Through a “thorough investigation” into the boy’s death by the BPD’s Crime Suppression Unit, police said they found a second victim.

“Officers were able to locate a second victim, a 2-year-old boy, who sustained multiple serious injuries while in Greenman’s care, but they were not previously reported,” the Department said. “That child was also cared for at the family’s home in the city of Beaumont, but he was not hospitalized at the time.”

BPD urges all parents who believe their child may be a victim to contact the department.

Anyone with information about Greenman or the case is asked to call the department at (951) 769-8500 or send an anonymous tip via email to [email protected].
