Woman’s ‘Wild’ Unmedicated and Unplanned Home Birth Shocks Internet

Netizens were horrified by a video showing the moment a pregnant woman returns home, before leaving the house again 30 minutes later, having already given birth to a newborn.

TikTok user @surenamariee shared a video on June 8 showing her sister’s “unplanned home birth without medication.” In the video it is said that she sent the hospital nurse home with 5 cm dilation.

Although the hospital may have thought that the sister had to wait a long time before giving birth, everyone was surprised when she delivered the baby at home about 30 minutes later. Since the clip was released it has shocked and amazed many, already boasting over 12 million views and over 1.1 million likes on TikTok.

Home security footage shows the woman entering the home at 2:47 p.m. and her partner beginning to load the truck again at 3:08 p.m. as they prepare to return to the hospital. Unfortunately for the couple, however, that was not to be. The video shows the ambulance and fire department arriving at 3:15 pm and baby Harper being born in the bathroom of her home.

In 2022, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a report finding that home births had risen to their highest number in 30 years, totaling more than 51,600 births in 2021. That’s up 13 percent from 2020, when there were 45,600 home births nationwide.

Since about 1.5 percent of all births in the US take place at home, it is the preferred option for some women who want to avoid hospital settings. Unfortunately for sister @surenamariee, she didn’t choose to deliver her daughter at home because the baby arrived much earlier than everyone expected.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) does not recommend home births because hospitals or accredited birthing centers are the safest places to give birth. Despite this view, the AAP offers guidance for women who want to consider the option.

Its experts say that two caregivers must be present at each birth, at least one of whom would be the main person responsible for the newborn. They should also be trained and equipped to perform CPR if necessary.

After @surenamariee shared a video of her sister’s unexpected home birth, she later posted an update revealing that both mother and baby are doing well and even met the firefighters who helped deliver the baby.

The TikTok user had nothing but praise for her sister, writing alongside the video that her “sister is so strong” that she went through the experience.

Since then, more than 18,000 comments have been posted on the viral video, with many people left horrified that the sister was sent home in the first place. Other women shared their own nightmare births. One comment read, “They sent her home!? That’s wild.”

Another person wrote: “I’d be mad at that hospital! Glad she’s okay.”

One TikTok user commented: “Sent me home 5cm as my 3rd and ended up having her in my driveway! Hospitals should keep you at 5!”
