Black Adam’s ending explained

Warning: The following contains full spoilers for Black Adam.

Dwayne Johnson’s long-awaited superhero movie, black adam, finally hit theaters, shaking up the DC Extended Universe like never before. Like many other movies in the DCEU, this one opened to mixed reviews from critics, but it still proves Rock’s claim that he was “born to play” Black Adam. Overall, the movie turned the titular anti-hero into a new powerhouse that will no doubt have lasting ramifications for the DCEU. Here’s an analysis of the latest DC movie and what his finale means for his cinematic universe.

Around 3000 B.C. C., in the land of Kahndaq, a young man rebelled against the tyrannical king Anh-Kot, who wants to forge the crown of Sabbaca from the crystal “Eternium” to obtain the powers of hell. But before the boy is executed for starting a rebellion against the king, he is rescued by the wizard Shazam, who makes him his champion by endowing him with the powers of the Egyptian gods. The champion kills Anh-Kot before he can take the crown and frees Kahndaq from his reign of terror.

Meet the JSA

Black Adam walks away from the explosion on Black Adam.

In today’s Kahndaq, Adrianna Tomez and her team of freedom fighters search for the Crown of Sabbac in order to save it from the Intergang, a technologically advanced syndicate that controls their country. Although they locate and claim the crown in Adam’s “tomb”, Adrianna is cornered at gunpoint by the Intergang, revealed to be secretly led by her colleague and descendant of King Anh-Kot, Ishmael Gregor. But before she can shoot him, Adrianna awakens the champion, Teth-Adam, from his centuries-old slumber, decimating the Intergang legions with ease.

Seeking to curb Adam’s destructive vigilantism, Amanda Waller (once the leader of the Suicide Squad) sends the Justice Society of America to apprehend him and take him captive. This superhero team is made up of Kent Nelson (Doctor Fate), Albert Rothstein (Atom Breaker), Maxine Hunkel (Cyclone) and their leader Carter Hall (Hawkman).

As Adam experiences the state of the modern Kahndaq, he is confronted by Intergang soldiers who threaten Adrianna and her son, Amon, who becomes Adam’s friend. During this battle, the JSA flies in with their plane and prevents Adam from killing two soldiers. Even with their combined forces, the JSA are unable to contain Adam and his overwhelming power, but they decide to form an uneasy alliance to save Amon after he is kidnapped by Intergang for hiding the crown.

The secret origin of Black Adam

At this point, the people of Kahndaq see Adam as their savior as they fight Intergang and despise the JSA for opposing Adam. This moment generates some intriguing social commentary, with Adrianna even criticizing the JSA for not helping her country to overthrow her pre-oppressors. However, Adrianna and the JSA discover that Adam is not the hero the legends say he is.

They learn that Adam lost control of his powers in ancient times and destroyed much of Kahndaq the day he overthrew Anh-Kot, leading Shazam and his fellow wizards to effectively imprison Adam. Not only that, but Adam later finds out that he wasn’t the boy the wizards made champion at all. In fact, they chose Adam’s son, Hurut, who transferred his powers to his father to save his life after being attacked by Anh-Kot’s assassins. Adam survived, but Hurut was immediately killed by the Killer Kings, who also killed Adam’s wife, Isis. After losing his family, Adam was enraged and killed the king seeking revenge instead of justice.

Eventually, the heroes track down Ishmael and give him the crown in exchange for Amon. But now that he has it, Ishmael decides to kill Amon anyway. Adam manages to save Amon and kill Ishmael, though Adam nearly kills the boy after losing control of his powers again. Choosing not to hurt anyone else, Adam reverts to his human form by saying “Shazam”. He then surrenders to the JSA and allows Waller to put him into hibernation.

hero sacrifice

Unfortunately, the JSA realize that Ishmael wanted Adam to kill him, as the Crown allowed him to return from Hell as the demon Sabbac, the evil antithesis of Shazam. The JSA then confront Sabbaca on Kahndaq, and Doctor Fate sacrifices herself to restrain him and free Adam from his prison. After transforming back into his superhuman form, Adam flies back to Kahndaq and battles Sabbac, while Adrianna and Amon lead a rebellion when the demon summons an army of the damned. This climactic battle ends with Hawkman helping Adam defeat and slice Sabbac in half, causing the villain’s evil army to vanish.

With peace restored to Kahndaq, the JSA departs and Adam seizes the throne, only to decide that being king is not for him. He then destroys the throne and decides to let the people of Kahndaq rule themselves. Despite this, Adam still decides to see the earth as his protector and takes the name “Black Adam”. But wait, there is more.

Superman is back!

In the film’s pay-as-you-go central scene, Adam is confronted by Amanda Waller via hologram, with the latter demanding that he stay within the confines of Kahndaq or face the consequences, as she and the rest of the world now feel threatened by him. Although Adam says that no one on Earth can stop him, Superman descends from heaven and approaches Adam saying that they should talk. So, Henry Cavill makes his long-awaited return as the Man of Steel, which seems like another step in getting the DCEU back on track.

Black Adam – Official Trailer 1

For a while, it seemed like DC and Warner Bros.’ the plans for his cinematic universe were all over the place, as Cavill had left the role of him a long time ago and the movies had nothing to do with each other. Despite many requests from fans, it seems that Warner Bros. wants to ignore almost everything that has been established before. League of Justice, including Cavill’s Superman. But thanks to Dwayne Johnson and the new management brought on board after Discovery’s merger with Warner Bros., audiences may finally get to see Black Adam take on Superman in the DCEU.
