Husband Refusing to Leave Wife’s Baby Shower After Being Uninvited Slammed

The father-to-be wrote online that he refused to accept that he wasn’t invited to the woman’s baby shower, so he sat outside the house all day while the event was taking place.

In a post shared by Reddit user u/Super-PizzaCat on June 6, it was explained that he and his wife were planning to have a child together. He hoped to invite the whole family, including the men. However, this created a difference of opinion, as the wife decided that her shower was “for women only”.

The poster said he “didn’t do much” because he didn’t want to spoil her celebration, but when she told him the no-men rule applied to him, he “thought she was kidding.” She felt that “it is customary in her family for a child’s wedding to be for women only,” much to the dismay of her husband.

Baby showers are an increasingly popular way for new parents to celebrate their upcoming arrival and for guests to shower them with much-needed gifts. A 2023 YouGov survey found that of 1,000 US adults surveyed, 65% said they had attended a baby shower and 22% had attended one in the past 12 months.

Overall, baby showers are an enjoyable day for guests, with 21 percent liking those who attended, while 47 percent saying they did. However, 20 percent of the participants expressed negative feelings towards baby showers.

The post reads: “I was upset at the moment. At a baby shower I paid for and planned, I was excluded from my own wife’s event in my own home. I found it absurd. The party lasted about 10 hours and I was expected to leave my own home the entire time.”

No matter how much they discussed it, the poster said that it “seemed ridiculous” that he was not allowed to attend. To make matters worse, numerous relatives who sided with the mother-to-be found out about the disagreements. The cartel received angry messages telling her to accept what she had decided, since it was her child, not his.

Since the event was held at his own home, the poster “refused to leave” and remained in the yard all day as a compromise, adding that his “wife is still not happy.”

Etiquette expert Lisa Mirza Grotts said news week that there are no fixed rules for a baby shower. Guests must agree to all decisions made for that particular event.

Grotts said, “Having been and has hosted many baby showers, it’s surprising that a man would want to attend. Most would enjoy the day off, especially as there have been other baby showers he’s been involved with.”

“In terms of baby bath etiquette, it’s becoming common for members of the opposite sex to attend, but anything goes. There’s no right or wrong. Whatever the host or mom-to-be decides.”

Grotts said it tends to veer toward a new school of etiquette advice, combining traditional values with ever-changing times. However, one thing that remains at the heart of his family is the sense of family that can never be underestimated.

Grotts added: “I agree with the mum’s sentiments: It’s not about him. They’ll have plenty of time to spend together when the baby comes.”

While a children’s party can be whatever the host wants, there needs to be proper communication about who’s invited ahead of time, rather than leaving it to guesswork.

Since the Reddit post was shared, it has received over 6,500 upvotes and over 3,300 comments. There has been a mixed reaction from other Reddit users, with some people thinking that the sign shouldn’t have acted so surly, while others believe that they were right to be offended.

One comment reads, “Your backyard campout is less of a compromise and more of an ultimate stand.”

Another person wrote: “It’s basically a communication problem (I think it’s also a cultural problem). Both make the problem bigger than it actually is.”
