Meet Debra from the series The Great British Sewing Bee
BBC Two’s Great British Sewing Bee returned for its eighth installment on 27 April 2022 and saw a group of talented home seamstresses, including Debra, set to impress judges Esme Young and Patrick Grant.
Debra was joined this season by her contestants: Man Yee, Annie, Cristian, Mitch Bridgewater, Marni, Steve, Brogan Sommerville, Richy, Gill, Chichi and Angela.
Unfortunately, Mitch was the first to be sent home.
On the other hand, Debra earned her first “Outfit of the Week” title of the season after sewing a dress that was described as “stunning” by the judges, who also loved the intricate watercolor details on the material.
After the victory, Debra expressed her humility: “The other guys are incredibly strong, much better than me. I was really impressed with what everyone else put together, it was really inspiring to see the creativity.”
Continuing her brilliance from week one, Debra once again wowed the judges with her soon-to-be-patented ‘zebra’ expression for her intricate wave-effect folds. However, this time she secured second place when Man Yee won the Pattern Challenge.
Unfortunately, Chichi left this week.
After watching the first episode of the Great British Sewing Bee, Debra took to her IG to say that filming started in September 2021 in Leeds. She recalled being excited and nervous, but most of all, thankful that she was selected and that she didn’t contract COVID before she arrived.

Without a doubt, Debra is a sewer at heart. But before appearing on The Great British Sewing Bee, she worked as a communications manager and personal assistant for a multinational company.
Holding her first needle at the age of 9, Debra initially started making clothes for her dolls. Then she eventually searched for full-size clothes for herself.
In addition to her passion for collecting vintage designer accessories, this talented designer also draws inspiration from designers whose clothes are out of her reach, such as Erdem, Gucci and Chanel. She prefers to develop her own design and freestyle rather than strictly follow a pattern.
No wonder their “Zebras” featured at Sewing Bee Week 2 (Sports Week) were on their way to being patented for their intricate wave-effect pleats.
However, Debra later admitted that she was not a very “sporty” person. It wasn’t something she wore. But she “extremely enjoyed designing a jacket for the hero of the house – the captain of the Lions of Wales and Great Britain.”
In case you missed the second episode, the contestants had four hours to make a pair of sneakers. They had to be robust and wearable, with a decent color scheme.
As for her icon, Debra is a huge fan of Coco Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld. She believes it was Coco who revolutionized the way women dressed: “She believed in freedom of movement, so the corset and pullover were worn for comfortable, loose-fitting garments,” Debra explained.
So, taking inspiration from Coco, one of Debra’s outfits consisted of a long skirt with a simple top. Both – without pattern.
Also, Debra is “very into” the history of fashion. Most of her pieces are inspired by dead clothes from the past.
