“My true vocation is to be a priest,” said Archbishop Philippe Barbarin, who said he was “very happy” and guaranteed that he would welcome “with joy” the “return to calm after the storm.” He also referred to possible future missions abroad, including the Middle East, commissioned by Pope Francis.

The 69-year-old prelate was convicted in a sensational trial in 2019 for remaining silent about the actions of his diocese’s former priest, Bernard Preynat, who was also convicted of sexual abuse of minors. But he was later acquitted on appeal in January of this year before resigning as archbishop in March.
