The Ile-de-France region is subsidizing the project of a journalist known for his work on police violence during the yellow vest protests.

The SGP-FO union police unit condemned this Friday the choice of the Ile-de-France region to award grants to the project of journalist David Dufresne, known for portraying police violence, but accused the organization of a “primary fight against hate”.

“Public order forces beleaguered by violent smear campaigns were hoping for a reprieve from the Ile-de-France regional council, which claims to be close to its police and gendarmes,” the union said in the treaty.

“Valérie Pécresse and Frédéric Péchenard are great supporters of defending the police and improving their working hours, but the regional council will participate in the financing of 40,000 euros, a project carried out by the antiflic primary,” said Yves Lefebvre, general secretary of the union Unit-SGP. “I ask that they remake this decision,” he added.

Author of several books, short stories, surveys or feature films and documentaries, David Dufresne made himself known to the general public with the “Allô Place Beauvau” project, which aims to outline complaints of police violence.

“False Lawsuit”

“The film will be called A Country That Rises Wise. It will premiere on September 30 and has been supported by Fortnight. This is a film made for discussion and reflection, but we argue, we don’t insult,” replied David Dufresne. “It amazes me that the police union would appropriate a boss who hasn’t seen a movie,” he added.

The Ile-de-France Regional Council considers the Critical Unit – SGP to be “a mock trial in the region, which is always carried out together with law enforcement, even during the Covid crisis”. “It is also a mock trial, because since 2015 the region has mandated a security shield that can be used to fund law enforcement teams,” the same source added.

“Films and documentaries financed by the region are selected by a selection committee made up of film professionals. The editorial line of the selected documentaries or films does not bind the region. (…) If defamation is necessary in front of a police institution, in this documentary, the Region reserves the right to suspend support”, said the regional council.
