After several weeks of growth in the number of deaths, especially in the regions most affected by the coronavirus, France found in may the same levels of mortality that in 2019 and 2018, according to figures published Friday by Insee. Between the 1st and the 18th of may, 27 218 deaths have been recorded in the territory, which is 6% less than in 2019, and 1% less in 2018, according to figures still provisional.

“Since the 1st of may, there is in France, excess mortality compared to the two previous years”, explains Insee in a weekly publication based on the data of the civil status, which does not show the causes of death. In the regions most affected by the epidemic of coronavirus, the number of deaths observed since the beginning of may is decreasing as well : in the Great-Is, 4% of deaths, at least between the 1st and the 18th of may, compared to 2019 and 3% more than in 2018, in the Hauts-de-France -3%) with respect to 2019 and +4% in 2018, and in Burgundy and Franche-Comté -1% and +8%.

The first half of may, the decline was also strong in South Corsica (-20% compared to 2019), the Vosges (-19%), the Haute-Saone (-16%), the Rhône (-11%) and the Moselle (-9%), of the departments particularly affected by the virus.

The decline in mortality is, however, more marked in the under 50 years of age “who had been spared by the rise in mortality in march-April,” said Insee.
