How to set up and use video screen savers in macOS Sonoma

Want a more interesting way to switch from desktop background to screen saver on your Mac? Well, macOS Sonoma lets you do just that with a very handy feature that’s new to the operating system.

In macOS Sonoma, Apple has introduced a number of new features, including a new type of screensaver and desktop wallpaper combination. The way it works is very simple: Apple has offered a number of video screensavers, including ones that float in the air or pass through underwater worlds. When the screen saver finishes, it slows down and turns into a static image, which becomes your Mac’s new wallpaper.

It’s a very subtle effect, but it looks great in action. Even better, setting up these video screensavers is easy and only takes a few minutes. Here we will show you how to do it.

How to set a video screensaver

Step 1: Open System Settings app and click Screen saver in the left sidebar.

Step 2: There are four categories of video screensavers: landscape, cityscape, underwater and land. There is also an additional group called Shuffle Aerials that brings together several screensavers from these categories (for example, there is a Shuffle Cityscape group that cycles through each Cityscape video screensaver). Press the screensaver in any of these boxes and it will automatically start downloading. If for some reason it doesn’t happen, click on download files button.

Step 3: Once the selected screensaver is downloaded, you will have some options. Enable Show as wallpaper switch to set the selected screensaver to also be the desktop wallpaper. That way, the screensaver can seamlessly start and end with an image from the video. Disabling this switch means you’ll keep your previous wallpaper while still using the video screensaver — macOS Sonoma will just switch from one to the other when the screensaver starts.

Under this option, Show in all areas the switch will apply your chosen settings to any desktop space you have open.

If you choose one of the shuffle options, you’ll also be able to decide how often the screensaver switches between different videos. You can choose every 12 hours, every day, every two days, every week or every month.

Step 4: There is another way to interact with video screensavers. Click first Wallpaper in the system settings sidebar. Here you can choose to use a background downloaded from a video screensaver without enabling the screensaver itself. Just click an option from one of the categories listed in step 2. If you want to pair it with a video screensaver, enable Show as screensaver. Otherwise, leave this switch off to use a different screensaver.

Step 5: Screensaver video images aren’t just for your desktop – they can also be used on your Mac’s lock screen. If you set a wallpaper from one of the video screensaver categories, the video will play on your lock screen. When you log in, it will continue to play for a few seconds before settling on your static background.

This works if both the background and screensaver are from the video screensaver set, or if it’s just the background (but the screensaver is not). As long as your wallpaper is from the video screensaver set, it will also appear on your lock screen.

Note that if you set a video screensaver but use a different image for your Mac wallpaper — that is, a background that is not from the video screensaver set — your lock screen image will match the regular desktop background, and there will be no video .

Video screensavers in macOS Sonoma create a really neat effect, giving you a wide selection of beautiful wallpapers and screensavers that complement each other perfectly. They are extremely easy to use and provide plenty of variety in how your Mac can look. They may not be a revolutionary addition to the operating system, but they are absolutely worth a try.
