How to turn off Siri on your iPhone or iPad

Although it has its detractors, Siri is still a popular virtual assistant for people with an iPhone or iPad – and not just because it’s built into those devices. Siri may not be able to answer all your queries, but it still has many useful features. However, not everyone needs a virtual assistant, so if you don’t want to bother Siri, Apple has provided a way to turn it off.

It is also possible to disable only certain aspects of Siri. For example, you can choose to only have Siri appear when you manually activate it using the buttons on your iPhone 14, rather than listening to the command “Hey Siri.” You can also adjust the suggestions that Siri makes throughout iOS 16, such as on your lock screen or when you search for information using Spotlight. Here’s how you can customize Siri more to your liking.

Step 5: Choose Turn off Siri in the last popup that appears.

This will completely disable Siri, so it will no longer respond to voice requests. However, as this last pop-up explains, it does not disable the Dictation feature. You have to disable this separately in the Settings app under In general > Keyboard > Enable dictation if you want information related to Siri to be completely removed from Apple’s servers.

How to disable “Hey Siri”

Siri has gotten better at recognizing the key phrase “Hey Siri” used for voice activation. However, it’s still not perfect and your iPhone can sometimes think you’re calling Siri during normal conversations. Fortunately, it’s easy enough to disable this aspect of Siri without turning off the virtual assistant entirely. Here’s how.

Step 1: Open settings app on your iPhone or iPad.

Step 4: Once you’ve done this, your iPhone or iPad will no longer listen for the passphrase, but you’ll still be able to activate Siri on demand by pressing and holding the side button. If you want to turn “Hey Siri” back on in the future, you can simply repeat the steps above; just keep in mind that you’ll need to retrain Siri for your voice by repeating a few example phrases.

How to turn off Siri suggestions globally or for specific apps

Among Apple’s improvements to Spotlight in iOS 16 are Siri Suggestions. Siri now makes suggestions for things like requesting a meeting, confirming a meeting, composing an email, searching Safari, and other actions based on your daily routine and how you use your apps. You control how these suggestions appear – or not.

If you usually find Siri suggestions helpful, but you want to turn some or all of them off, here’s how to do it.

Step 1: Open settings app on your iPhone or iPad and select Siri & Search.

Step 4: Drag the sliders for any function you want to deactivate. For example, switching off Show in app will prevent Siri from making suggestions while using Safari. On the other hand, disabling Show content in search will prevent content from Safari, such as your history or bookmarks, from appearing in Spotlight searches in iOS 16.

How to turn off Siri iCloud sync

Siri makes extensive use of machine learning to adapt its responses to your life and habits. As Siri gets to know you more and more, she should become more efficient and useful every time you call her.

You can use iCloud to sync Siri’s machine learning intelligence across all your Apple devices. This is usually enabled by default if you opt in to iCloud sharing features when setting up your iPhone or iPad, but you can turn it off at any time in iCloud settings if you want what Siri has learned about you to be stored only on your local device.
