A 29-year-old single mother living in Delhi took to Reddit to describe her financial struggles managing her household on a monthly income of ₹18,500. The woman said that she is employed as a teacher in a small preschool school and that she supplements her earnings by tutoring several students. She further shared that she lives in a 1BHK flat in East Delhi, for which she pays a monthly rent of ₹5,500. Her post about managing finances got a lot of attention on Reddit. While many users shared similar experiences of running households on a budget, others looked to her for inspiration.

“Anyone on Delhi Reddit who runs a family on less than 20k a month like me?” wrote Reddit user ‘GarimaSoul’ while sharing a post on community platform ‘r/Delhi’.
In her post, the Reddit user shared that she has a four-year-old son who is mildly autistic and non-verbal. “I take him to the school where I teach and I don’t have to pay for him. I can’t give him therapy because it’s quite expensive. Sometimes I send him to the aanganwadi [rural child care centre in India] get free food or nutritious snacks because sometimes even buying fruit becomes difficult,” Garima wrote on Reddit.
She goes on to talk about her struggle with not being able to save money by the end of the month. “When I read posts here about people paying 30-35k in rent, I just dream of how much I would save if that was my income. Then I also read people with 1-1.5 lakh who cannot save,” she further wrote.
