Riley Powell, 18, and Breezy Otteson, 17, were last heard from on December 29, 2017, as they were returning home to Eureka, Utah, where they lived with the former’s grandfather. The teenage couple was reported missing on January 2, 2018. An exhaustive search and investigation took place for months, but to no avail. Powell’s Jeep was discovered near Cherry Creek Reservoir on January 9. The vehicle was hidden by some trees with two flat tires.

2) Their bodies were discovered in a 100 foot abandoned mine shaft

The bodies of Riley Powell and Breezy Otteson were discovered months later, on March 27, in a remote, abandoned mine in Utah County. Two were tied up and stabbed to death. The revelation came after one of her friends, Morgan Lewis, whose home they visited before she disappeared, made a chilling confession when she was arrested on drug and gun charges two days earlier, only confessing because she felt terribly guilty.

Lewis reportedly claimed in her confession that Riley Powell and Breezy Otteson made one last stop at her home in Spanish Fork before going home in late December 2017. Her boyfriend, Jarrod Baum, who came to the house while the three were hanging out, flew into a rage, telling her she “can’t have male friends.”

Baum then tied up the teens, taped their mouths shut, and drove them in a jeep to a remote location, where he beat Powell and then repeatedly stabbed him before pushing his body into a mine shaft. He allegedly forced Lewis and Otteson to testify to the crime before slitting the latter’s throat and dumping his body down a mine shaft.

A KSL TV report said Baum claimed he “made Riley suffer but felt bad for Brelynne (who was supposedly pregnant at the time) so he made her death quick and painless.”

4) Baum Was Found Guilty Of Murder And Kidnapping, Among Other Charges

Jarrod Baum was arrested on March 28, the day after the bodies of Riley Powell and Breezy Otteson were discovered, and charged with first-degree murder and other crimes, to which he pleaded not guilty. Morgan Lewis was also charged with two counts of second degree obstruction of justice.

Last April, Baum was found guilty of two counts of aggravated murder, aggravated kidnapping and desecration of a body. He was also convicted of one count of obstruction of justice and possession of a dangerous weapon by a person with limited supervision. Baum received four consecutive life sentences.
