5 questions we have after The Mandalorian season 3 episode 3

Coming off another game-changing episode, The Mandalorian season 3 returned this week with one of the weirdest and most surprising installments of the Disney+ series yet. Picking up after last week’s events Mines of Mandaloreepisode 3 of The Mandalorian season 3 follows not only Bo-Katan (Katee Sackhoff) and Dino Djarin (Pedro Pascal), but also Dr. Pershing (Omid Abtahi) and Eli Kane (Katy M. O’Brian), two supporting characters from past seasons.

The episode titled Proselyte, splits its focus between those two stories. As a result, The MandalorianThe final installment raises new questions about the future of Mandalore itself, as well as the fragile, quietly disturbing bureaucratic state of the New Republic of the galaxy.

Why didn’t Bo-Katan tell Din about the Mitosaurus?

Episode 3 of The Mandalorian season 3 immediately picks up where the predecessor left off. After unexpectedly seeing a Mitosaurus, Bo-Katan asks a stunned Dino Djarin if he saw anything after he “fell” into the cavernous depths of Mandalore’s Living Waters. Din says no, and Bo-Katan doesn’t mention the Mitosaurus she saw very clearly moments earlier.

Why not? Is it because Bo-Katan is still struggling to come to terms with what she saw? Or is he trying to decide if he wants to share his new secret with Dino, his biggest competitor for the throne of Mandalore? Far, The Mandalorian season 3 did an exceptional job of keeping Bo-Katana’s motivations unclear, and her decision to keep her view of the Mitosaur only continues that trend.

Why was Bo-Katan’s castle bombed?

On their way back to her home planet, Kalevala, Bo-Katan and Din find themselves ambushed by a squadron of Imperial TIE interceptors. After the duo manages to destroy all the enemy ships, they are again surprised to discover an even larger group of Imperial hunters waiting for them on the Kalevala. Several TIE bombers then destroy Bo-Katana’s castle and, moments later, she and Din are forced to retreat.

Proselyte, notably, does not reveal the reason behind the Imperial Remnant’s attack on Bo-Katan. In fact, the only explanation given in the episode comes when Mandalorian warrior Katee Sackhoff remarks that she “kidnapped a lot of Imperial warlords.” It’s fair to assume there’s more to the surprise attack than Bo-Katan’s comment suggests. For now, though, fans will just have to wait to find out more about the ambush.

Why did Elia Kane betray Dr. Pershing?

Most of the runtime, Proselyte follows Dr. Pershing and Eli Kane, two former Imperials, as they attempt to reintegrate into society as part of a rehabilitation program run by the New Republic. The process doesn’t go particularly well for Pershing, who is forced by Elia to continue conducting the cloning experiments that once made him so important to Giancarlo Esposito’s villainous Moff Gideon. Towards the end of the episode, Pershing is shocked to discover that Elia has been secretly manipulating him all along.

The scientist is captured by the New Republic and subjected to a painful mind-wiping process – overseen and directed by Elia herself. The episode ends a few minutes later without explaining why Elia decided to manipulate and betray Dr. Pershing in the first place. Is it because he bitterly hates the Empire and wants to punish anyone who participated in his crimes against the galaxy? Or is it because getting her fellow Imperials to break the rules of the New Republic gives her an opportunity to continue acting out her own fascist urges?

At the moment, the latter explanation seems more likely than anything else, but it’s also unclear where Pershing and Elia’s story will go next.

Was Dr. Pershing’s mind really erased?

When Dr. Pershing is connected to the New Republic’s torture device (known as the “Mind Flayer”), he cries out in fear that the machine will erase his mind. His New Republic captors unconvincingly told him that wasn’t actually going to happen, but Elia’s decision to power the machine all the way up certainly suggests that Pershing’s experience with the Mind Wanderer will have lasting consequences. Will his mind really wipe the machine?

Currently, unfortunately, there is no way to know either. On the one hand, it would make sense for the New Republic (and, to some extent, Elia) to be interested in robbing the intelligence of someone like Dr. Pershing. On the other hand, it also seems unlikely that The Mandalorian wanted to make one of his most potentially dangerous characters completely harmless.

Will Bo-Katan become a permanent member of the tribe?

In the end The Mandalorian season 3, episode 3, Gungirl (Emily Swallow) tells Bo-Katan that her recent experience swimming in the living waters of Mandalore has allowed her to become a member of the tribe as long as she chooses to keep her helmet. In the moments that follow, Bo-Katan is warmly welcomed into the Tribe by the current members, even as she struggles internally with her decision to keep her recent sighting of the Mitosaur a secret.

Given where the episode ends, it’s worth asking: Will Bo-Katan decide to stay with the Tribe in the end? As much as he seems to look down on the sect and its ways, The Mandalorian season 3 also made it clear that Bo-Katan must find a way to reconnect with his fellow Mandalorians. Her acceptance into the Tribe could give her the opportunity to do just that.

Like most of the questions that come up right now The Mandalorianhowever, Bo-Katana’s future in the Tribe will depend entirely on the path she chooses to take going forward, which currently remains convincingly unclear.
