Friends remains one of the most beloved sitcoms in television history. The long-running series about six young people living in New York captured the zeitgeist of the 1990s like few others, becoming a television icon of Generation X. Friends it is still a hit today, and younger audiences are discovering it through streaming and becoming fans of the shenanigans of the six main characters.
Friends is the equivalent of comfort food: harmless and enjoyable, it’s something almost anyone can enjoy. Still, the series had its fair share of unpopular characters. And while some fans might find some of the main friends annoying, the main characters are still almost universally adored. But these characters – including one of the six main characters – are among the most hated in the Friends, either because they are evil, boring or simply unnecessary. That’s not to say their presence ruins any episode they’re in, but it’s enough to make fans roll their eyes and count the seconds until they’re no longer on screen.
6. Ross Geller

Although he is one of the main characters of the series, Ross is also one of the most annoying. His anal, stubborn personality was clear from the first season and only got worse over time. Ross was still one of the Friends‘ funniest characters – David Schwimmer was arguably the show’s most gifted physical comedian – but also infuriating, to the point where it became confusing why the others were still friends with him.
Ross is now seen as the epitome of the “good guy” persona, a title he earned through years of toxic behavior. Insecure, whiny and possessive, Ross was a terrible boyfriend, an irresponsible teacher and an unreliable friend. At least he was a good father – to Emma, anyway, because his toxic masculinity must have rubbed off on his already boring son, Ben.
5. Emily Waltham

Poor Emily. Arguably the most hated character in the show’s history, Emily is Ross’ romantic interest throughout seasons 4 and 5. She is an English girl who has a whirlwind romance with Ross that inspires him to become less sheltered and more impulsive. The two become engaged after just a few weeks, marrying in London in one of the most infamous weddings on television, with Ross saying Rachel’s name at the altar.
After that, the series turns Emily into an open opponent. The truth is that Ross treated her terribly and deserved every bit of torture she put him through. Still, Emily became laughably unlikable by the end of her tenure, and when she finally disappeared, fans cheered, presumably in tune Ding Dong! The witch is dead.
4. Leonard Green

Parental figures in Friends were pretty terrible. Rachel’s father, the domineering Leonard Green, is a wealthy doctor from Long Island who punishes everyone around him. She behaves horribly to everyone, from the waiter to her daughter’s friend; even his family can’t stand him, his ex-wife resents him, and his two non-Rachel daughters only use him for his money.
Maybe that’s why Leonard is so bitter. Still, Rachel makes it clear that he’s always been a jerk, so maybe that’s just how he likes to be. dr. Green only appears in a handful of episodes worldwide Friends‘ 10 seasons, but those are enough to solidify him as one of the least likable characters on the show.
3. Kathy

Kathy, played by Paget Brewster, is one of them Friends‘ most memorable guest stars. She first appears in Season 4 as the woman Chandler had a crush on before he realized she was dating Joey. What follows is a lengthy subplot that sees her develop feelings for Chandler while still with Joey. The two kiss, leading to a huge fight between Chandler and Joey. However, Joey backs off, allowing Kathy and Chandler to begin a short-lived relationship that ends when she cheats on him.
Although far from a bad character, Kathy’s story takes an ugly turn. After everything they went through to be together, Kathy cheating on Chandler was funny and frustrating. To be fair, it seemed like the writers didn’t know what to do with her and decided to get rid of her in the easiest way possible. It’s a shame because Kathy and Chandler were a great couple, but her send-off made her one of the most infamous characters on the show.
2. Paolo

1st season Friends features Rachel engaging in a mostly physical relationship with Paolo, a tricky Italian neighbor she meets during a blackout. Their affair is overly passionate, and Rachel goes into great detail about how good a lover Paolo is. However, they have nothing in common and Paolo turns out to be a jerk who sexually harasses Phoebe while she massages him.
Paolo is shit; there is no other way to put it. He’s a jerk who cheats on Rachel and attacks Phoebe while she’s trying to do her job. Friends he’s had some awful romantic partners—Charlie, Janine, Barry, who’s dating a psychologist Phoebe who spends her time psychoanalyzing the group—but none as disgusting as Paolo. He stopped appearing after the second season and nobody missed him.
1. Judy Geller

The “mean mom” archetype comes to life in the form of Judy Geller. Starring five-time Emmy nominee and television icon Christina Pickles, Judy is Monica and Ross’ mother. She shamelessly favors Ross and takes every opportunity to belittle Monica. Sometimes her comments are funny; however, more often they come across as mean and just plain rude.
Judy is funnier when paired with her bland and hilariously clueless husband, Jack, played by the equally iconic Elliot Gould. However, when left to her own devices, Judy is annoying and unnecessarily cruel to Monica, who does her best to please her mother. Judy is Monica’s terrible mother, and it’s a real surprise that Monica grew up as healthy and sane as she was, given the treatment she received.
