This day, which symbolizes the time of year when humanity has used up all the resources that ecosystems can in a year, will take place on August 22.

This is a date that will be unsettling, and it falls earlier and earlier every year: the “Earth crossing day” brand, every year, the day when humanity has used up all the resources that ecosystems can generate in twelve months.

But, for the first time in several years, this date could fall later than usual. According to the Global Footprint Network, an international research institute in California, the “overflow day” could occur on August 22, 2020, which is three weeks later than in 2019, where it fell on July 29.

According to the agency, this “reversal history” compared to the typical trend is mainly due to the containment measures introduced around the world during the Covid-19 pandemic. But this trend, extraordinary, could not last. “It shows that big and fast changes are possible. But this reduction of our ecological footprint is forced and undesirable, and as it is not accompanied by a systematic change in our production and consumption patterns, it will not last,” judge Mathis Wackernagel, president of the Global Footprint Network.

1.6 to planet Earth to meet our needs

According to the institute’s calculations, and as World reminds us, this could be equivalent to 1.6 planets in 2020 to meet our needs, whether food or energy. Deforestation, loss of biodiversity or increase in CO2 concentration in the atmosphere will continue to affect the planet as a whole this year.

But these encouraging figures show that another life is possible: especially based on figures from the International Energy Agency, the Global Footprint Network predicts a 14.5% drop in the carbon footprint year on year. In order to achieve this result, experts estimated that energy consumption would be reduced by 9.5% in the period from January 1 to the “day of tolerance” compared to 2019, which would result in a reduction of global CO2 emissions by 12.5 % in the same period.

Although the forest industry has had to limit its activity during the closure, the organization also predicts an 8.4% reduction in the forest footprint. The Global Footprint Network believes, however, that the food footprint will not evolve: if food consumption has declined in rich countries – particularly as a result of adjusting the ratio of meals cooked at home – production has been maintained at the same levels, resulting in significant food waste.
