If you’re looking for the next chilling true crime drama, look no further than Peacock A friend of the family. The limited series is based on Jan Broberg (McKenna Grace), a young girl who is kidnapped twice over a period of several years by the same family friend, Robert Berchtold (Jake Lacy).
The Broberg family, led by Bob (Colin Hanks) and Mary Ann (Anna Paquin), were devoted to their “faith, family and community,” according to the official synopsis. When Robert and Gail (Lio Tipton) Berchtold move into the neighborhood, the Brobergs immediately make friends with their new neighbors. However, Robert begins to become obsessed with the Brobergs, and his fascination eventually leads to him repeatedly kidnapping Jan.
The compelling trailer teases how Robert exploited Bob and Mary Ann’s vulnerabilities, causing cracks in their family’s relationship. Jan’s story was previously told in the documentary Abducted in Plain Sight.

A friend of the family comes from Nick Antosco, who previously created crime dramas Rank and Candy. While filming this series, Antosca began to empathize with the Brobergs and realize how the “master manipulator” could use them. “I hope people come out of the series with a deeper understanding of the family and say: At that time, in that place, they were like me. They made terrible mistakes, but they loved their children,” Antosca said in a statement.
Both Jan and Mary Ann Broberg serve as producers of the series. “Our story is relatable because so many families have direct experience with this type of abuse,” Jan said in a statement. “I hope our story will start conversations – because secrets live in darkness and silence.”
