On the night from Friday to Saturday, the Caretta Caretta turtle nested at a depth of 20 cm to spawn.

A Caretta caretta or loggerhead turtle has come to spawn in the middle of Sablettes beach, a large public beach in the heart of Fréjus (Var), the French Network of Mediterranean Sea Turtles (RTMMF) announced on Monday.

This egg laying, extremely rare in metropolitan France, took place on the night of Friday to Saturday, said Sidonie Catteau, citing the local RTMMF and the project director of the Marineland association, confirming Var-Matin’s information.

“We went to check if the turtle that we saw on the beach had laid down well and, in fact, when cleaning the sand we saw eggs in the 20cm-deep nest,” said Sidonie Catteau, who noted that she immediately covered up the nest after laying down. the identification.

A protection device has been placed around the nest, and the staff of the city of Fréjus, as well as the agglomeration, will ensure surveillance of the premises.

Tracks of another turtle were also detected this weekend on another beach in Frejus, but further from the city center, Saint-Aygulf, without teams of experts sent to the site, they will not be able to find the nest.

In 2016, a loggerhead turtle was already coming to the same Saint-Aygulf beach to lay its eggs. After two and a half months, four eggs hatched and the turtles managed to reach the sea with the help of scientific teams.

Until now, the French coasts were particularly known as feeding areas frequented by individuals, subadults and non-breeders. They prefer to be in Greece, Tunisia or Italy.

But the Metropolitan France Marine Turtle Observatory has recorded even more regular breeding activity since 2016 for this protected species. He attributes the reason to the increase in surface temperatures in the French Mediterranean in recent years.
