In the US state of Washington, a 28-year-old daredevil lost his life after colliding with the ground while trying to break the record for the longest jump on a motorcycle ramp. According to authorities, Alex Harvill was killed Thursday morning during practice.
At the Moses Lake Airshow, he intended to attempt a 351-foot (107-meter) jump in front of onlookers. Video of the event shows the rider’s motorcycle crashing into a dirt hill after missing its intended target.
The Columbia Basin Herald, a local newspaper, said Mr Harvill appeared to have been thrown over the handlebars and lost his helmet in the crash.
Organizers of the Moses Lake Airshow initially reported that Harvill was taken to hospital with injuries, but a police spokesman later confirmed that he had died.
According to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, “We extend our sincere condolences to Alex’s family, friends and loved ones.” She had spent the previous two weeks practicing for the feat, but he had yet to jump the ramp until his first attempt Thursday, according to his wife, Jessica, who was at the air show with their sons.
A professional motocrosser, Harvill also holds two previous records in motorcycle jumps. He had a day job working on a farm and cited Evel Knievel, a stuntman, as one of his influences.
